Jackson- where to run/cool trails?

Three long weeks of my 5:15am uber-leg-workout-from-hell is almost over and for my strict pennance i am rewarded with a week of ripping at JH starting next Sunday night. :D :D :D :D :D :D

While I'm out there, I'm going to have to go on a looooong run for marathon training (15 or so miles)... just wanted to see if anyone could let me know some safe, easy to find trails or running routes. Even if there's a good loop that's about 5 miles or so, I wouldn't mind doing that more than once.

Oh, and I have some other JONG-ish questions if anyone wants to indulge me:

- where is the best place to demo skis in JH?
-any recommendations on what I should demo? (current skis: 184 volkl p40s & 172 Nordica Hot Rods, level 8 skier, 5'4, 130#... just been a while since I've been west, so not sure what to ride vs. my typical ice skates out east)
-where can i get the best breakfast burrito?
-how do i break into dick cheney's world hq and orchestrate my own global domination takeover?
- best burger?

Most of the good trails are under a ton of snow right now - Cache Creek is always a good one but with the snow, you will probably only get about 3 miles back. You can always run on the village road depending on where you start - it can be as long as 20 miles and you can add loops though various neighborhoods like the Pines where Cheney lives or the park -

As for your other questions:
Best Burrito: I vote for D.O.G on Glenwood in town
for Skis - I would definitely go to TVS in the Village - great selection and a really fun place, they will hand you a beer when you come in at the end of the day.
The burger is a tough one - couple favs are billys burgers on the square, Steiglers on the village road

Most trails are covered in snow right now. Cache Creek on the southeast side of town is groomed for about 5 miles and gets enough traffic that you can run there. The Elk Refuge road is dirt and doesn't have too much traffic. GTNP starting plowing the park road north from the Bradley-Taggart trailhead. No traffic and beautiful views if you don't mind running on pavement.

Any of the shops in the village have good demos, just depending on what brands you want. Shop around for the best ski for the conditions. Could be some snow early this week and then corn later on.

Down On Glen (DOG) for the burrito.

Billy's for the burger.

Cheney lives in Teton Pines. Security is pretty lax when he isn't around.

i like making laps around thunder and sublette lifts, many good runs off those lifts for the average skier. also check out skiers right of apres vous if there is good snow, some good hidden stashes in there.

as for breaking in dick cheney's your going to need a group of people and some hi-tech equipment because its guarded heavely. but let me know what you find if you do break in.

food wise, if you have the money check out the "Gun Barrell" its one of my favorite restaurants of all time. the elk-chops are insane

Everything above is right on; since you're going to be here for a week, here are a couple less obvious choices.

Running: Go north of town 5 miles to Gros Ventre ('Grow Vahnt', not 'Grosse Ventray') and run east to Kelly (5mi) left for a quarter mile or so, and then right out toward Gros Ventre slide. Second half is hilly with beautiful views, and you'll pass one of the best views of the tetons at the Wedding Tree.

Breakfast: go to Bubba's one morning. They have breakfast burritos, but also the workmans special: 2.75 for coffee, eggs, bacon/sausage, hash browns and toast/biscut. Can't beat it.

also if there is fresh snow get to the tram early (first tram) and do whatever you want but get to the hobacks... they are so fun... and toga has some nice little cliffs (skiers left of apre vous)

If there's freshies, rent snow shows and run some uphills from the Jackson base- just stay off of the groomies. If the snow's fairly packed, just run in your shoes. You may not get much milage, but hill training rules supremo.

I saw your team in training site that you had linked... I'll be running the San Fran Marathon as well.

The fact that your long run is already at 15 miles makes me a little nervous. Alas, my 8 mile run yesterday didn't feel that bad.

(and I hope you have better weather and a better airline experience than I did on your trip to Jackson; I ate breakfast each morning at the cafe under The Mangy Moose. The breakfast burrito was all right, but their red-eyes were quite tastey)

All the running routes sound great- maybe I will just take up residence and finish my training there in JH: A lot nicer than doing loop after loop in Central park :)

Alpine, the Gros Ventre route sounds gorgeous, I will definately check that one out... what's the Wedding Tree? let me guess- where a lot of couples get pictures taken for wedding albums bc of the view?

stonedhero, I knew better than ask on here for "where is the best on the mountain to ski" and did some searching of old threads, but I totally appreciate it :D

Viva- SF marathon- so the hills training up the mountain would def give me a well-needed ass-kicking in that respect. do you run on snowshoes? I always look down from the lift to snowshoers going up the mountain thinking "those idiots, why aren't they skiing," but maybe in this case I should actually try it! :tongue:

Roadtrip- that's awesome that you are doing SFM as well- we'll have to meet up. this your first? i've done chicago and san diego before this... and was actually training for vancouver this year, but decided it would be retarded to be in BC after ski season if I can't go to Whistler (yes, skiing was my only decision factor in what race to do), so switched to SF- that's why I am ahead of you in milage, though, cause vancouver is May 7th, so I have an extra two mos. of prep for this one.

As for breaking into Dick Cheney's pad, if successful I think we should establish a maggot base camp... who's with me? (this thread is probably getting flagged and reported to the secret service as I type)

Are you sure you want to run while you'll be skiing???

In any event, call 307.739.3300 and find out the progress of the plowing on the park road. Great running, but I suggest you get a rental bike from Hoback/ The Edge Sports and ride on it.

I like Bubbas as recommended above- their buscuitsand gravy rock. Try Pica's across from the Albertsons for a fun Mexican meal- great drinks too!

Was just in jackson two weeks ago. Bubba's was great.

Here is my question to the Jxn locals. We learned at bubba's that we could bring our own liquor (and I mean we had a bottle of jack on the table and a case of beer on the floor - 8 guys at a bachelor weekend). We were blown away by this, and then later found the same thing at the pizza place.

Is this allowed everywhere? Not here in CA.....that's for sure.

Tacoma....if you have any backcountry experience/gear, going out the gates off the tram is epic. Maybe some maggot would take you out there?

I don't know about the pizza place (Mountian High Pizza Pie???)

But you sure can BYOB to Bubbas, but make sure you tip well because the gals there (and Ron) make their $$$ by table turnover and you'll screw them if you sit their all night and drink.

We've at there and drank for a long time, we were just very careful about tipping well

Don't know too much about other rests.

Hey, I done did SD marathon 3 or 4 times, but not San Francisco, so no unsolicited advice to give you on that one.

There are a bunch of places in ny that are byob, but sometimes they'll charge a corking fee, for example if you bring wine.

I have limited backcountry exp and no gear- generally just hike-for-turns stuff on mt. washington, cannon (over on midersol), whiteface and then when i lived in ut did a couple cat tours of the cottonwood canyons...and lots of hike for turns stuff on those mountains- loved it... i just don't get out west often enough to have a ton of exposure... but if anyone wants to meet up for some turns, i can probably hang with anything you throw at me, skiing wise :D (gross overstatement at JH? not sure... :confused: i'll just leave it at "bring it on")

chances are, i'll be skiing solo for a couple of days, so i would love to meet up if anyone is around... the people i am dragging on this trip's idea of a "ski vacation" are: wake up at 10, eat a long, slow breakfast, get to the mountain at 11, ski till 2, then drink beers all day. Heratics! :FIREdevil

I'm more of a wake-up-early for fresh tracks, eat a powerbar on the lift for lunch and ski till last chair type myself... :biggrin: (fueled, as aforementioned, by a big breakfast burrito and incentive of a yummy burger and beers afterwards)

Viva- did you do SD marathon last summer? I was in that one... and never got the promised beer at the finish- WTF?!
