I just got an approval from my bank for a mortage loan on a new construction home. This is my 2nd major step to becoming an adult or at least someone who is in serious debt. The first is was buying land. Now I have to start shopping for a dog to share the house with. I'm looking at either a lab or brittney. I'm leaning toward the lab since I like dogs that like water.
Congrats. As for a dog, may I suggest a Border Collie. Great dogs, smart, athletic, can run for days.

Don't get a Border Collie unless you can deal with a dog that's smarter than you, knows it, and likes to prove it all day long.
Get an Australian Shepard. THey are the best dogs hands down. Kayaks with me, skis, hikes, everything. They are super loyal and very smart. Lab's are very overrated and pretty, well, dumb.
My lab is smarter than FOS.
And prettier too, ya freak. :p
Maybe some day a maggot will buy some land in a killer resort and we'll all show up and do a good ole' fashioned barn raising, adding on an extra ten to twenty bedrooms when they're not looking.

I had two Aussie Shepherds, brothers, they both died of old age a couple years back. Great dogs indeed. A better choice for the non-hyperactive than a Border Collie, in my opinion.

I have a portugese water dog.... cause there are members of my family that are allergic to dog hair. they have the personality of a super hyper golden retriever, but the fur of a poodle.

My dog, my friend, Diesel passed 30 days ago...I miss him so very much, we used to bomb around the closed together, I still smell his collar & cry.

As far as the dog goes I grew up with retrievers mostly chessapeakes, but did have a golden as well. I have wanted a lab for as long as I can remember. They do have good hunting abilities and are great house dogs according to the owners I know. Brittney's are great grouse dogs but aren't thrilled about water.
I don't know much about border collies other than that talking pig movie. Do they like water?
My Gf's border collie amazed me when she instinctively picks a perfect ferry line while swimming across a moving river! I can't even teach some kayaking humans to do that.
and when we go to the ocean, she loves body-surfing in small waves.
I don't know if all border collies are like that, but this one would sniff out water a mile away and dive right in.
My BC that I had to put down recently absolutley loved the water. He'd fly right off the end of the dock chasing anything and everything. The 2nd one we got was abused and we were her 3rd home. She didn't want anything to do with the water. I'd say its all in how you raise them. If you want some info on em do a search on google. There is tons of info out there. We just got a new one to replace the one we had to put down from these people http://www.mokanbcrescue.org If you look on the dogs for adoption page, Blue(Boo) is the one we got. If you don't wannago through the puppy phase consider a rescue. Hope some of this babbling is helpful.

My yellow lab Willie (short for Wilhelmina - we picked the name before the dog...) is the best girl ever. Regardless of the temperature she would rather be wet than dry. She's not dumb, definately not an Alpha (there are ways to test for this when they're puppies) and an absolute sweetheart around the kids. She's fun when it's time to play, and mellow when it's not.
High-maintenance dogs like Brittanies, Border Collies, or Vizslas need a LOT of room to run and even more time from you to work them properly. If you don't have both the will to train them and the space to do so you're not being fair to the dog and shouldn't get one.
I'm hoping to get another Lab in a few years. I don't think I can ever be dogless again, and thus would like them to "overlap." Maybe Willie can teach the new pupster the ropes.
Ted and Tipp both had good things to say, it's how you raise them water-wise, mine's pretty comfy in the water but looks like a wet rat when she gets out.Quote:

Secondly, they have to have room to run as mentioned, mine's 10 1/2 years old and people think she's just a pup, they are very energetic dogs and need their excercise.
Beautiful, intelligent, and lots of instinct, great around kids, and the most loyal dog I have ever owned, couldn't say more.
Congratulations on the new house. With the exception of getting laid in your own castle; there's nothing quite like pulling into the driveway of your own castle. :D
As for what dog to get - I've got a piece of shit wire hair fox terrier that I'd pay you to adopt . . . . or terminate. :mad:
