Considering moving to Tahoe.....suggestions?

Ok so I'm highly considering bailing on Mammoth and moving to Tahoe. Looking for some suggestions from Tahoe mags. First off, what resort should I move by and why (pass price, terrain, ease of accesability). What towns around the lake are best for living in (rent, stores, good skishop). Is there anywhere up there that is better suited for my bike riding ass (I don't have a car). Do you guys know of any good shops (really good) to work for or of any that will buy you a pass? Where are the best summer places to live. So I'm looking for all the info you guys got. I'd be making the move in late July or early August so the job and housing need to line up with that.

My .02... it's a trade off: I like the CA side because it lacks casinos and the cheese factor. But then you have to pay state income tax.

I will say I know people that live in various parts of the lake and you can't go real wrong. I'd think South Lake, Truckee/Kings Beach/Tahoe City; Incline Village probably is not as ideal.

CA side hands down. IMO I'd tend to go either West Lake-Tahoe City-Carneilian Bay-Kings Beach or even Truckee you have Alpine or Squaw even Homewood. The main question I think is what kind of a mountain you really like.

If I was in the position to be able to move cloer, I'd do Reno...(cheap, plenty of employment opportunity), but lacking a car, it wouldn't be an option for you....You might be able to save enough money by living in Reno vs. Tahoe Basin to offset the costs of having a vehicle... I have no real info to base that off, just an off the wall guess..

I live in Reno, and it makes sense for someone who 1) Wants to own a home, 2) Wants a more career oriented job, and 3) Likes being closer to Costco. It's cheaper, you don't pay state income tax, and if you like to smoke in restaurants you can still do it. I fuckin hate cigarette smoke, so this is one thing I am not stoked about on NV.

You already live in CA, so it would be an easy move, no getting a new DL, etc. If I had a choice I'd live in Truckee, because it's the largest community near the lake that isn't Reno or South Lake (gaper/tourist hell BUT closer to Kirkwood) and has some good shops and a normal sized grocery store.

You should prob come up and crash with a mag or two and learn the place and make your own subjective opinion. You might be happy in an area that defies normal skier logic.

It's ideal if you like to ski backcountry. Mt. Rose is 7 minutes from my house. Diamond Peak is 2 minutes. Northstar is 15 minutes. We do ok.

True, true, true. I forgot about Tahoe Meadows, etc.
I live in Reno and my home I'm building is 1/2 way between Reno and Mt Rose or 1/3 was between Reno and the Incline Village shoreline. It'll be a 12 minute drive to Mt Rose chairlift.

No matter where you live here, if you like the outdoors and love the snow, you will feel like you are living the dream! Every time I ski I feel so lucky and happy. :biggrin:

I'm looking most likely in the Truckee or Tahoe City area. I was stoked on Alpine the other day and don't think I can go wrong with Squaw. I'm mostly into big mountain skiing and like what Squaw has to offer from everything I've seen and read. Reno is way out of the question. As far as the bike is concerned its more of a to and from work thing. Good chance of me being able to comandere a car for groceries and what not. Thanks for the thoughts and some of you mags up there may get a request or two for a couch in the next few months.

biking and hitching from truckee sucks in the winter. walking into town fromm donner lake, sierra meadows, or TD takes a long time, and once you get there tart is a farce. sugar bowl runs a free shuttle from truckee, so you could go ski there. you'll want a car. otherwise you should just live in olympic valley or at alpine.

The good news is that I'm used to the biking in shitty weather thing cause thats what I do now so its no big deal to me to have to ride a few miles from home to work on my bike. I'm just more concerned about days off and getting to the resort.

personally, i am fond of truckee, have lived on and off there for 10 yrs or so. its a great town (but getting more crowded every yr with all the new multi-mil homes/private clubs, etc being built). it would be a bitch to not have a car and live there though, honestly. sugarbowl, squaw and alpine would be your "home" mountains, as they are all close by, and all rule in their own way. spend time at ea. before you committ to one for the season w/a pass. i am partial to alpine and get a pass there every year (but love squaw and sb too).

summers rule: mtb'ing is sick, great hiking, climbing, etc etc....

truckee has anice mix of places to drink and eat, etc, and the new villages at squaw and n'star are also strating to take off and fun places to hang.

as for shops, back country is great, porters is ok ( i know the manager in the TC store of you need an interview), granite chief pretty good, etc.

tahoe city has a lot to reccomend too (esp being that its closer to the lake for summer time fun), but i am a truckee-guy for sure. good luck and drop a PM if you want to chat and get more beta.

Ha! I'm thinking the risk aversion/priorities of "alpinedad" might be a bit different than our 50kleg, who I am pretty sure is like 20 and has been @ Mammoth for a couple of seasons. Let the boy be young! :D

Indeed. But the guy's talking about biking to work in a ski area, so I figure proximity is probably an important consideration.

24 and this is my third season in Mammoth. Never had issues finding work so it doesn't worry me. Last friday was the first time I have ever called in to go skiing in 7 seasons of snowsports. I have no qualms with biking to work a few miles in the snow, powder biking is quite entertaining. Thanks again for all the suggestions!!!!

? Why are you leaving Mammy? I am just curious...high costs, shitty job, low pay, sausage fest, or a combo of all of the above. I assume it has been tough financially over the last year with everything that happened

While I know its also taking place in Tahoe I'm honestly sick of the Luxury building taking over. Its more amplified in Mammoth with us being a town of only 4 square miles where as Tahoe is far more spread out. I'm also tired of not having year round employment and gettin a new job every six months or so because there is almost no summer employment in this town. Rent is also cheaper on average in Tahoe and pay to rent ratio is better on average in my findings. Admitedly my pay to rent ratio kicks ass for this town but thats only for about another two months. I also want a place that actually has a bit of civilization with in drivin distance. Where I have more than just one Vons. Where I can go to Reno and have anything I want in about 40 mins, cause my 40 min drive to Bishop doesn't get me much more than I have in town in my opinion. I guess I just want mountain living with in reasonable reach of city life if I need something. So its a combo of things. That and I grew up vacationing for 17 years in Tahoe and always loved the place and knew I someday wanted to live there so why not now.

Don't listen to these wealthy North shore snobs. If your used to the ghettos, then you need to land yourself in the South Shore.....oh I forgot about Kings Beach, sorry!:redface: Heavenly is a pretty easy walk to bike to bus to resort, you just aren't going to scare yourself regularly on that mountain.....unless tourons scare you. South shore b.c. is definitely superior to the North shore.

However, based on your last post you might be happiest with the lax development pace found in the rural area of Bridgeport.

I have lived in Sparks now for roughly 8 months. Use to only ski resort, now ski both back-country and resort. There is so much BC skiing near Mt. Rose it's not even funny. Look into Incline Village area, kind of in the middle of it all.
No matter what choice you make will be a good one, can't go wrong up here.
