Bout time for some more Solitude Stoke

Wow--it got warm quickly today, but the north facing stuff was money. Managed to get some south facing shots before it got too mucked up. The skier is Guy Morneault. Solid skier and great guy. Enjoy.

The kick ass shot that almost was--I just barely missed guy on this one. It's still a decent shot, but geeeeeeez, if only I'd gotten him fully in the frame!!

Yeah - what's with the June weather?!?!? Last night at 9 pm it was 52 degrees and RAINING here in Laramie. It's FEBRUARY and I live above 7,000 FEET!!! WTF?!?!?!

see im used to cameras that say "DISPOSABLE" on the side

im guess i am not hip enough with all the camera brands to know this kind of stuff

one of em was for 1,399 and i bet you spent more than that (accesories)

i would take 1000 pictures a day with a camera that cost that much

i will stick with polaroid mainly because they develop on the spot

What about a digital if you are looking for a camera to step up from disposable but not looking to spend an insane amount? I know very little about cameras, but I have a nice digital that went for around $300 at most "department stores" and I am happy with it for general pictures I like to share with friends. Just my .02

Ha! Grizzle you are the man. I really like the head on shot with Guy, lots of light behind him illuminating the snow spray.

How do you get those frozen-in-air-crisp-flying-snow shots? I tried running about 1/800 - 1/1000th with auto aperature and couldn't quite freeze it. I think the problem is that I was panning with the subject to keep him crisp, but you'd think that quick a shutter speed would do the trick.

Are those Atua's Guy is on? edit- nevermind they look like BS 8.6's.

i would like one but the problems i dont like is

instant picture( they do that gay 2 seconds flash thing)

the ones at best buy ect are all a little exspensive and i know ther are better deal online

any kick in the right direction would be appreciated

I posted this in answer to a similar question several weeks ago. It should help. And yes--those are next year's atua's he's on.

I've found the the Auto WB setting with my camera does an accurate job. I do carry a grey card with me if for some reason I want to set it manually. I find that no less than 1/1000 exposure will do for skiing. Many times, depending on how fast the skier is going, how you're shooting it, etc. it might need to be more. Being primarily a scenic photographer, I practically always shoot in my Av mode (Aperture priority) and then I'll get the most depth of field I can without going below 1/1000 sec. Obviously, the larger your aperture, the more margin for error you've got on your focus.

The #1 most important thing (at least for me) for action shooting is tack sharp focus, so whether you're shooting a one turn wonder, or just trying to follow your subject and shoot, I suggest pre-focusing on 1 or 2 turns. Let the skier ski a natural line, but tell them where you want them to go. They don't have to know which turns you're shooting. Many times it works better that way. If they're hitting an air, remember that, depending on which angle you're shooting it from, you likely will not have the skier in focus the entire air. Pick the spot that you think will be the climax of the air--whether it be takeoff, midway into the air, etc. If you can't focus on "mid-air", gauge the distance to it and pick an object at similar distance to focus on, or use your camera's focusing distance (located on your lens, sorry to be obvious) and guess the distance accordingly. With practice, you'll get pretty damn accurate.

On rare occasions I'll use my autofocus. Canon's AI Servo mode is fairly accurate, but I just don't trust it entirely. I know many do--I just need more practice.

Anyway--that's just my .02. I'm sure there are many other photogs on here that could provide valuable insight as well.
