Quality Recruiters?

I've been looking on the for a job out west (focused on Colorado and Washington mostly) for a while now. The result has been a few interviews (both phone and face to face). Well I just found out that the job I wanted didn't work out so I am finally ready to admit I may need the help of a recruiter. I searched the forum and didn't find any threads discussing quality recruiting agencies and thus decided to start my own.

I'm sure some of you have used recruiters before so I'm asking if there is a particular recruiter or recruiting agency you'd recommend? I've never used a recruiter before so I don't really have any idea where to start. I'm in the environmental field with a strong background in transportation related environmental issues and environmental document (EA's and EIS's) reviews.

Hey Grange, I've used recruiters before and get calls from them semi-frequently. Won't be able to help you with a specific recco b/c recruiters (good ones at least) are industry specific.

A bit of websearching may uncover a few you could contact. I would especially concentrate on one in the markets you are interested in (geographic). This is especially true for niche jobs where you have something + somewhere very specific you are interested in doing.

A good recruiter is worth their weight in gold and will even occasionally handle most of the $ negotiations (their comm goes up with your starting).

So true. So true.

My current job and my last one were the direct result of recruiters. Once your name gets out into your industry-specific recruiter pool, they'll be contacting you.

One thing to keep in my mind is that when you switch job, or when your colleagues switch jobs, keep their contact info and keep in touch with them. If recruiters aren't contacting you, they'll be contacting people you used to work with, and your ex-colleagues can start forwarding them your name as someone who might be interested in the particular position they're looking to fill. It really is all about networking and never ever burning bridges.

Also, it's a 2-way street, so if you can ever refer people to a recruiter, they'll greatly appreciate it, and remember you next time an opportunity pops up.

And ditto as well on what LB said regarding salary negotiations and what not. My last two jobs all I had to do was worry about selling myself to the position w/o worry for $$$ negotiations because I knew the recruiter would handle it. It's easy to sit back in your chair when you know you have the position locked and yell at the recruiter, "Is that the best you can do?! Show me the money!!!!" :D At this point, they're basically like your agent.
