I had some once that were caused by an inflammation of the muscles in my lower back. My doctor told me over the phone to take a double-triple dose of Tylenol (5 gel-tabs of extra strength) to see if that would calm them down enough to come in to see him. It worked, I went in for an examination, and there was nothing (they never re-curred, touch wood.)
Backspasms have many causes, from what I understand, so go see a doc, NOW. It could be anything from dehydration (New Years/Christmas cheer) to a ruptured disc in your spine.

Damn...all to familiar with this. Get off your feet ASAP. Flat on your back with some sort of pillow under your knees can help. Get ahold of some sort of muscle relaxing drug and go see a good orthopedic doctor and find out exactly what is up. Bummer man.
Maybe you brought back meningitis from the sub-continent. If so, I wouldn't worry about it since there's no cure.

Nothing weird or out of the ordinary, just woke up this morning and a few minutes later I was doubled over in pain.
I hit it pretty hard the last few days, plus I had some, um, intestinal issues for a few days, maybe I am dehydrated.
Seriously, I have found that fine Tequila will eliminate the pain very quickly. Drink a lot of water with it, washing down Advil.
Have you checked to see how dialated you are? Perhaps it is time for that trip to the obstetrician!Quote:

I suggest you seek treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Or Cedar Sinai in LA. Or any other hospital that forces you to travel out of the northeast. Because we really need some snow here.

when my back was bad, I would take flexorill (sp) a muscle relaxant, and if needed lortab.
With that and lots of stretching and time it worked itself out.
I have an extremely sore lower back from shoveling out to get to the mountains and work. I have had a history of lower back problems, from birth, called something, don't remember (missing a vertabrae in my lower back).
Spasms hurt like hell. If it is hitting you so hard that you can't even walk, I would get some electro stim from a doc or Chiro, what ever you feel more comfortable with. My Chiro is a sports med dude and used to be trainer for some NFL team (again, team name??) He has worked wonders.
Drink a lot of water, dehydration will cause more spasms. I mean a ton of water. The discs in your back, between the vertebrae may be compacted, thus havign two vert. hit each other and cause a huge amount of pain and spasms. At least this is my problem. Fill those disc back up with water and they expand, thus creating the proper cushion between the vertebrae.
Get off you feet, sitting is even worse for you for periods lasting an hour or more. Back flat, pillow under knees and when you can start strecthing VERY easy, you don't want to hurt it more. Try to stretch ever half hour to stay loose and 800 mg Advil every 4 hours to keep inflamation down.
If you are going to cough or sneeze, sit, grab something or laydown, it is gonna hurt and you want to keep as much pressure off your back. Hell, I have been coming back from a bad back and I sneezed and it threw it out for another few weeks.
Back problems suck man, I know all to well.
Thanks for the replies. Drank a lot of water, took a bunch of advil, and the spasms seem both less frequent and less intense.
Now I just need to get out of this damn chair.
Ice you might try eating a bannana or some other food high in potassium.
Magnesium tablets under the tongue. Apparently magnesium blocks the neural pathways that keep the muscles spasming. I've had many back issues over many years. My chiro turned me on to this and I have NEVER taken anything more effective or quicker acting.
