New Carbon Surfs and Dynafits

Finally mounted my carbon surfs with the dynafit comforts, first time in my life I've ever had untouched gear. :biggrin:

The surfs have this optional adapter plate that for the dynafit comforts that make mounting a no drilling affair.

I just used Dynafits for the first time this weekend and am not going back.

Mounting new skis is a Glenlivet kind of moment.

those things must weigh less craps I have taken....

good deal. no drilling takes all of the stress out of mounting. not much chance of really screwing up. hope you enjoy the lack of weight but make sure and pace yourself. it's too easy to haul ass for a few hours and be out of energy for the next 6.

btw, did you get a kick out of how small the binding box was. i had to laugh when trackhead threw my dynafit box at me and said "here they are". the fritschi box would have knocked me down.

The total setup weighed in at 10 pounds 4 ounces. The new carbon surfs are a bit heavier than the old ones but noticably stiffer and stronger.

so would this adapter plate work with the k2 tele pre-drilling as well then? is the voile pre-drilled design the same as the k2 design?

Yup, same 4-hole pattern.

Finally got out on this setup, skied James Peak via St. Mary's Glacier yesterday morning. The skin up was nice, except for forgetting to lock my toe and coming out of my binding early on. I had to click back in on a 25 degree section of ice with a 40mph wind in my face in the dark. That took a while. Other than that it was a nice day out, the ski descent involved a variety of snow, from frozen hardpack, to frozen sastrugi, to frozen ice.

The skis held up well overall, the surfs can certainly handle the firm at reasonable speeds.

how much do the plates weigh?

Nice setup. Some day I'll venture over to the lightweight setup for long tours/traverses. Let me know what you think of it.

I don't know, I was curious myself to that, maybe 8 ounces for the pair. Let me see, the overall setup I have is approx 10lbs 4 ounces (digital bathroom scale). The comforts I have weigh 2lbs 5 oz a pair, that leaves 9 lbs 15 oz unaccounted for thus far. Voile lists the surfs as 7lbs on their site, but that's the 2005-2006 model. I have the 2006-2007 model which is quite a bit stiffer and heavier, at least in the one pair in one hand the other in the other hand test. Maybe a half pound heavier? That would make sense, 8 oz for the plates, and 8 ounces for the skis would account for the pound missing.

If you wanted to go uber light, you could get the tlt classic with no brakes, the 2005 surfs, and just drill right into the ski. That would get you down to about 8lbs 13 oz, which is pretty significant drop in weight. My old setup, titanal II's and x-mountains weighed 12 pounds 6 ounces, I didn't think that the 2lbs would make that much of a difference but it did. As for the performance, I really liked the way the dynafits felt underfoot, can't wait to get them on some surface that isn't frozen rock solid.

A dude over at couloirmag weighed the plates and screws at 13 ounces, so please adjust the previous calculations as necessary, I'm going home.
