Too much of a good thing...

This last week, the Southern Chugach has gotten HAMMERED with snow :fmicon: - Alyeska received 44" at the top on Sunday and Monday and was closed both days.

BUT....

since then, the mountain has only been open for a limited time, and no North Face, and now MORE storms are rolling in (85 mph winds + more snow) which looks like Aly will be closed tomorrow and probably Saturday too.

Meanwhile, Turnagain is sliding all over the goddam place, the road was avyied on in two spots (one 18' deep) :eek: - so BC riding it out of the question.

In the front range, a snowshoer was killed by an avy on one of the most mellow mountains in AK yesterday; God only knows whats happening at Hatchers..

So, Alyeska will probably open the top on Monday or Tuesday when I am back at work and no BC this weekend...

and I just got new boots.

But I'm not complaining...;)

there are quite a few safe bc spots down turnagain way. i'm certainly heading out. assuming the road is not blocked.

snow levels at hatcher's still haven't changed much. a friend was there last weekend and said it was ok, pretty thin though. highland got a foot yesterday and is getting blasted with winds as well, probably very sketch there. the flattop death is a serious bummer.:(

where are you going? Roads blocked somewhere around MP 80 and 33 which I think is basically TP - but depending on how things shake up on Friday, snowpack may settle down.

there's always the tin can trees, or summit lake's old ski area, just watch out for the very top of the ridge it slides from time to time. manitoba is a nice place too, if you stay skiers right (out of the "gully") it is pretty safe. could also check out eddies (but my gut is telling me not to go there for some reason...probably because of the spot the skin track usually goes into the trees) plus there are a number of tree/bush runs all over the place between tincan and coopers landing.

mostly just a chance to get out above the rain we will probably have in town, and get some mellow turns in.

I'm listening to the news right now - you can't even drive to Turnagain right now...closed until noon tomorrow. Up to 2 ft. have fallen already and more is coming...:eek:
hmmm - maybe Sunday? ...or Monday?
