I have about 6 gigs of random stuff- mp3s, .mpegs, pics, etc.
How do I get this from my laptop and transfer it to my home PC?
I have no internet access at home. Is there some sort of trick I can do where I link the laptop directly to the desktop and transfer files that way?
The only way I did this in the past was to save stuff to a Zip drive and transfer, repeat process 100x, But even then some files are >100Mb (Movies, jackass episodes and shit)

Yeah, Pu, there is some way to hook them up directly using a serial cable...but that's all I remember. Did you try google or some shit?

in macs you just wire them together, designate the other comp as a remote hard drive and begun sucking the stuff. about 2 minutes of work.
propably a harder job with pc:s.

If each system has an ethernet connection you may be able to network them and transfer the files. Hopefully you are on Win XP, which is easier to network than previous windows versions.

If the host PC has USB, sack it up and buy yourself a USB drive, then copy the data.
If not, get out your stone tools and hook up the parallel port (it's faster than serial), get your yak extra hot and then copy the data over the LPT* logical device.

Is it as easy as getting a serial cable, hooking up the machines and transferring? Or do I require software installation and other Nerdy shit?

If both machines have an ethernet port, you should be able to connect them and transfer the files. To connect them, I think you need either a special ethernet cable (the equivalent of null-modem serial cable) or a cheap hub. You can probably get a hub at CompUSA or CircuitCity for $20-40.Quote:

What version of Windows are you running? I think you could set up each machine to have a static IP of 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2...then do "Start...Run" and "\\192.168.1.1\c$" to access the super secure default Windows share.
That's funny because I have a mac and an XP box on my home network and the PC can find the mac no problem but I'll be damned if I'll ever get the mac to find the XP box. Not that it matters.Quote:

Don't use serial, that's the slowest. For the most primitive PC, LPT is fastest, although a network card would do better as the Irish Italian says.

It might be easier to just buy an external USB/Firewire drive from CircuitCity, copy the stuff from one machine to it, copy said stuff to other machine, return hard drive to CircuitCity.Quote:

You can network the computers if you have the right gear. Then you can share the drive on your home computer and copy files to it.
You need:
- an ethernet port on your home computer
- an ethernet hub or special crossover cable
- an ethernet port on you laptop
The two computers have to be part of the same workgroup so on the laptop lookup the workgroup name in the Control Panel under Networking. Set the home computer to the same workgroup name. Make sure that File Sharing is enabled. Open "My Computer", right click on the drive you want to share, select Properties, click on Sharing and make sure the drive can be shared. You have to give the drive a name too.
On the laptop the home computer should show up under Network Neighbourhood (hit refresh, F5). Open the home computer and open the drive you want to share. You can now access the drive as if it was a local drive on your laptop.

Go to properties on network neighborhood. Select "make new connection". Choose advanced connection, then a connection b/t 2 computers. Make this one the host. Choose the parallel port, then (at this point I assume you have the cable connected) choose the other machine as the guest.
This should allow you to transfer. These directions are for XP, but 2000 will be real close and you should be able to figger it out in 98.
It's not the fastest, but just let it run tonight and it should be done by the AM
