That's right, Baldy chutes at Alta were open on December 23!! They were only open for about 1.5 hours because a bunch of people (myself included :o ) didn't notice the note that only main chute was open and skied other lines. It was worth it though. First tracks down little chute, nothing but ultra smooove windbuff and chalk. Without question my best run of the year :D

this is totally a Alta JONG question, but is main baldy straightlineable when conditions are right??

Anything is straightline-able.
Today was my first full day at Alta, what an introduction. Baldy Chute, Devil's Castle, East Castle, Eagle's Nest, and a bunch of other places that I don't remember the name to. I'll have a hard time walking tomorrow, I've never sidestepped so much in my life but the snow was so perfect. I still think East Castle was better than Baldy, what a run. Alta is amazing, I can't wait to get back. Now back in WA to catch the next storm cycle. Mmmm....more powder.Quote:

Yes, it was first straighted in the 1950's Jim Gaddis and Alan Engen (son of Alf). They went straight down Baldy's Main Chute -- on old wooden skis with tiny, twitchy, releasable Miller toepieces and wearing leather boots reinforced with wraparound longthongs--a feat that has never been repeated on such difficult and dangerous equipment.Quote:

In the '70s, Wild Bill Wilson threw front flips into Alta's chutes and bowls and went straight down everything using the new "step-in" bindings and very long, skinny skis.
High Rustler, Little Chute, Main Chute, etc., have all been straighted in eras past.
Nowadays, fat skis, twin tips, and binding technology have all made such feats much less dangerous and much more possible for the masses.

However, cattracks cutting High Rustler, and the traverse below Main Chute have made them impossible to straightline. To straightline Main Chute, you'd have to hit it late season (after Alta's closing) after a huge storm.Quote:
