Highest snowfall rate??

In Snowstruck, Fredston says that Whittier, AK had a storm that dumped seven inches of snow an hour for sixteen straight hours.

7"/hr... is this type of snowfall rate even possible?

What's the highest snowfall rate ever officially recorded? (didnt google too hard)

this is not quite as much but steamboat got 47.8 in. in 48 hours earlier this year

This question was recently addressed in some publication. I think it was in "Ask Dr. Flake" in skiing mag (the inquirer) in one of the last few issues. If I find it I'll let you know...

In January he answered which North American resort holds then 24-hour snowfall record. Bridger of course saw 71" in 24 hours... my question is about the greatest snowfall rate or most snowfall in one hour.

Greatest snowfall in a day: 75.8 inches (Silver Lake, Colorado; April 14-15, 1921)

Greatest snowfall in a single storm: 189 inches (Mt. Shasta, California; February 13-19, 1959)

funken, I've got a book that lists the following snowfalls as records:

2.4" in 15 min. - Oswego NY (1/26/1972)
4.8" in 30 min. - Oswego NY (1/26/1972)
9.1" in 60 min. - Oswego NY (1/26/1972)

There's a bunch of 24H records listed below this, the Bridger dump is not in there because the book was published before that happened.

was the 24 hour record somewhere in South Dakota? I remember seeing that in the news last year during the big storms that hit tahoe.

If this is true, the numbers add up to make it an unofficial 24 hr record. Usually when it snows this heavy in Whittier, the storm is accompanied by some wind, making accurate measurements difficult. One thing for sure, the snow there falls like moist cake mix due to the very high moisture content coming from Prince William Sound. Powder it is not. As the locals say "there`s no place shittier than Whittier"

BTW, that`s a great book; I`m in the middle of it right now.

that book is the shit though id never want to ski with fredston or fesler....a little bit too paranoid for my style, but whittier ,ak definately gets the precip..look at its location right in the middle of the hourglass between prince william sound and cook inlet/turnagain arm ...generally they get twice as much precip as anywhere in the area but its usually in the form of rain...excellent place to get drunk though,the police blotter for whittier in the turnagain times paper is always very humerous
