Pocket Rocket Alpine Touring Question

So sorry if this is a repeat, but I searched and couldn't find much.

I have heard that the mounting point on PR's is pretty far forward, but I don't know what this means for Naxo's as I am a randonnee jong. I am wondering if I should mount my Naxo's on these babies at +1 or -1, as I have skied them at +0 for a while and liked that feel.

PR doods: what is your input? How do you like these skis for touring, and do you think I should mount them up or back?

Appreciate any info you guys have on PR's and touring (perhaps with respect to rear fixation of skins too...). Thanks, guys. :)

Edit: this will be my only touring set up. And I have Salomon X Wave boots (alpine boots).

Are you going to be jibbing when you tour? If so, mount them forward.

Just worried about the increased flotation vs increased control issue. They chatter, so mounting them forward would be conducive to skiing more difficult terrain, but mounting them back would be conducive to skiing pow. I have heard both sides from the few people I have heard from on this topic.

bc billygoat boards
bc light weights

resort pow
resort groomers
jib sticks

and the list goes on and on and on

They're soft enough that I don't think you need to mount them back to float in pow, especially with the Naxos flat ramp angle, plus you'll want all that tail if you ever have to get down something firm. If you skied the PRs with alpine bindings and liked what you felt, I may even mount the Naxos forward. If you haven't skied them on alpine bindings, mount them center and add a shim later if you find it difficult to hold an edge on firm stuff.

If it were me, and you like the feel where they are. Bring em to a good shop and have him compare hole patterns and get as close to the line you like as possible. The patterns maybe so different, you can them mounted with boot center in the exact same place...

I have 175cm pr's with freerides mounted on the line and am happy with that mount. They are reasonably light for touring and work fine for the resort. I use clipfix skins, which work well.

You posted this question in the "AT Binding mount question" thread the other day. Below is what I wrote for touring with PRs. I think the Naxos will be very similar to Freerides and even some alpine bindings in terms of feel. I would definitely NOT mount them forward...either 0 or -1. I think your choice of boot matters MUCH more -- will you be touring with alpine boots (ugh) or AT boots? If alpine, tend toward -1. If AT...-1 or 0.

what boot are you using?

in general, i'd say forward tends to be better than back for (light- to mid-weight) AT setups, but:

(a) the mounting line on PRs is pretty far forward;
(b) the PRs are way soft.

In this case, I'd probably drop back just a bit.

(I do have a set of PRs mounted w/ Dynafits, and I ski 4 or 5 different AT boot/binding/ski combos.)

I'm touring on PRs with Freerides and Scarpa Denalis. Mine are mounted on the line and they feel fine to me. I guess mounting them back would make powder easier, but powder turns only seem to be a problem when I'm forward. When I stay centered, things are just fine.

Of course, all my skis get mounted on the line and I just ski them. I never give a lot of thought to mounting position, I just mount them all on the line and ski them...guess I'm the odd one here.

Oh, by the way, I'm 5'11" & 175#. I also believe it "the rider, not the ride". I've taken my Pocket Rockets up Denali carrying some sizeable loads and skied down a fairly serious line. Although soft, I like the even flex and light weight.

That said, I do ride much stiffer skis, too, depending on where I'm going/what I'm doing.

I had PRs with freerides as a touring set up for a couple of years.
They were a nice ski in powder and soft snow and light to carry.
I swapped them for exploders last year because I didn't like how they handled in crust, avi debri and other snow conditions I would rather not tour in but seem to encounter a lot!
I had them center mounted which worked for me.
I used clip-fix skins and had no problem with that (although some people told me clip-fix wouldn't work on twin tips.) BD sells a larger tip for their skins which you will need.
Twin tips can be a nuisance if you want to put the tails into the snow for an anchor.

Which is why I can't fit the tip of the skins over the tip of the ski, I'm guessing...?

I took a file and filed two 5mm notches (took under 10 minutes) in the tip so that the standard tip of the skin would be able to "bite" a little deeper. Worked perfectly, and there was no issue with the edge or base, even after 100+ days on them.

The issue wasn't so much with the width as the low profile of the tip. With impeccable technique, they would have stayed on...but the slightest mis-step would knock the tip off (before the modification).

I'd do that before paying extra $$ for a wider skin tip -- you still might have the issue with the low profile with the wider tip.

6 2, 220lbs, 185 PR's with Naxo nx01 (second year slightly beefier model), mounted at 0. A nice setup until I order my Bros this spring :biggrin: .

PR's are a fairly light alpine touring ski (foam core, blah blah). Never really skied them at the resort.

Yeah, I've seen a couple of people file notches in the tip of the PR for skins.
I didn't because mine were new and only my second pair of new, new skis. I couldn't bring myself to attack them with a file. It seemed to work out OK for the other 2 people who did though.
The wider tip was quite secure (never slipped off, 30 uses) although the skin tip never looked as secure as on say exploders.

Bring em to Larry he'll set you up, and if he can't get a naxo jig he'll tell you where to go....

No way, dude! I don't think there even are any shops down here that do mounting. Don't even think there's a shop here that SELLS skis, much less tunes them.

I was planning on going to Larry to get them mounted, but I'm talking about trimming skins and messing with my clipfix (or making a rat-tail, not sure what I'm gonna do yet) and that jazz. Stuff I can do on my own.

Had mine mounted at Neptune 2 seasons ago. At the time they were the only shop in Boulder that had really dealt with Naxos.

Bring them beer and they'll do it while you wait :biggrin:
