Sundance?

My two kids and I are heading up to SLC next week, driving Sunday and we'll be at Solitude on Monday, maybe Snowbird Tuesday, somewhere cool (but still undetermined) on Wednesday, and head back to chilly but moisture-free Flagstaff on Thursday. I'm thinking about Sundance for Wednesday, also they've got a $14.00 twilight ticket good from 2:30 till the lifts close and we could easily make Provo from Flag by 2:30 for some Sunday turns. I've done a thread search, but mostly found references to the film festival. I'm not looking for any info on lift ticket prices (I've fully explored their web site) or for recommendations on whether the Provo Super 8 or the Red Roof Inn has nicer rooms, but I was wondering if anyone had any impressions, opinions, or expert advice regarding skiing at Sundance in general. Maggots?

its a decent resort, one good expert bowl.
a 1/2 day with kids is proboally about right.
the food there at the base is incredible, and sometimes you see a short weathered famous guy skiing.
the place makes Solitude look crowded

I think it would definetly be worth at least an afternoon up there, I havent skied sundance for probably 10 years, but what I remember is mostly fun intermediate terrain. Just DO it, small resorts have more flavor and vibe.

Great feel to the place and great food as Woodsy said. Too bad you aren't there on Sunday for the brunch and a few turns. Definately worth a stop! Have fun!

I'm a Sundance local, it's a great place! For it's size you can't beat it, it's got great terrain for a small resort, good food, cool vibe and it's never crowded. I'm sure you and your kids would have a good time.

Thanks for the advice. It's decided, we're definitely going to leave Flagstaff early on Sunday and ski the twilight tickets at Sundance, have dinner there and then head into Salt Lake. I was thinking dinner at the Red Iguana that night, but we can do that Monday or Tuesday. That'll give me more time to decide between the mole verde and the cochinita pibil.

When you get to Sundance make sure you take the base lift (Ray's Lift) all the way up and over the front mtn to the back mtn, don't get off midway, the back mtn is where you want to be...and when you get to the Red Iguana you gotta go with Killer Nacho's as an appetizer...one other thing, make sure you have a $5 on you before you get to Sundance, the parking lot at the base is so small they make you pay $5 to park at the base, otherwise you're parking in a fucking mud bog up above and then you have to take a shuttle down to the base, there are spots above the mud bog where you can park and ski thru the trees to the base but that's too hard to explain, just make sure you have a $5 and you'll be good.;)

the killer mexican food.
loved the place and was a friend of Ramon's ( RIP) but the place is so well known now, you wil have to wait almost any night of the week.
they have raised the prices and well its kind of like alta to me, the best but too well known around the country and the first place people go.
Blue Iguana is same menu, same moles, down town.
La Frontera ( 400 South 900ish west) and La Puente are good too.

I had dinner there outside in the summer once, and Dennis Hopper walked by in a pink polo shirt. disturbing.

Thanks, Double S. We'd probably have ended up on Ray's lift anyway (after wading through the bog) but only because my son's name is Ray and we'd pretty much have to ride it. After living in Mexico on and off for 9 years I'm the worst mexican food snob I know, I've eaten both Blue and Red, and they're the best mexican restaurants I know of outside of Mexico. Five bucks, Ray's lift, Killer Nachos: we're set. My kids are so goddamn lucky, the day after we get back from Utah, they're going to Hawaii with their mom. I'd go too, but her husband is the jealous type. :tdo13:

Hey, woodsy, Robert Earl Keen played here last Wednesday, the second time this year.

The place is smallish at 450 acres compared to other Utah resorts, but has plenty of quality terrain. From the tops of the lifts, multiple well-angled bowls, chutes, gullies, and tree shots make for some interesting riding.

Oh yeah, and the scenery at Sundance doesn't suck either :) :

I've only been there in the summer for mountain biking, but the scenery and food are well worth a visit (how can you beat it with your itinarary), no matter what the skiing is like... especially considering the lack of crowds.

And yeah, Sundance kept me entertained for 8 years of skiing every moment that I was free. There is more sweet terrain than most people give it credit for. It also gets a decent amount of powder, especially from storms coming from the south.

I've just been busy...I don't get on here much during the summer months...you're right Sundance rocks! But that's our little secret right?:biggrin:

Sundance worth the day ticket. Mid-week you can get lonely.

Dinner excellent.

Reco stay overnight. Apres-ski was included when I stayed there. Small/cozy rooms, but not expensive. Breakfast buffet was included, too. Killer muffins and fresh baked bread. Eggs anyway you like them.

The hotties working up top at the Bearclaw this year don't hurt either.

I'll find out her name tomorrow, she's brand new though...probably only about 18:p Jeremy's up there today, he's working for Rossi and skiing/boarding the Bird every day...his brother Nate is running the Bear Claw...Jeremy comes on here every once in a while...are you going to be in Utah this year?

No, I am stationed in Turkey right now for the next 14 months. But I am planning on separating a bit early around next fall so I can go to school in Utah and work at a ski resort again.

So if that girl is 18 then it isn't Mandy, but I must say Bearclaw is usually very good at keeping the hotties employed up there.

So you did say you knew the Nymans right? Because at the moment, Steve is currently holding a place on the Olympic Team which is pretty damn awesome. And Sundance is where all of that started...

Heading up there right now...yeah I know the Nyman's, they showed Steve a couple weeks ago on tv at the Beaver Creek DH.
