thanks for the warning:rolleyes2
No. I believe it is called an extra tropical storm and from my understanding it has to start in the "tropics" (ie., very far from where you are). It is just a very strong low pressure system (an Aleutian Low, I believe)Quote:

Rontele's right on; there are extra-tropical hurricanes, but generally not where you are. Anyone living in the eastern US got hit by one back in 1991 ("The Perfect Storm" movie was based on that one) it was a hybrid of a noreaster and a tropical system...
You, on the other hand, are the victim of a screaming northern branch of the jetstream, which is WAY out of place from where it should be. Do us all a favor and give it a good shove south next time you step outside, ok?
RB, what are you doing to lure it down here? Monkey can't do everything by himself.
Yes, it's the name of the lotion RB rubs on his scalp. :fmicon:Quote:
Hey RB is there such thing as extratopical hurricane?
Kablam!!! I really tried... but I couldn't resist. Please forgive me.
Oh, and first ever use of the FM... so right!
We've gotten 11 inches of rain this month :( I'll do my best to puch it down torward you :) I miss that yellow thing that is warm (whats that thing called again?)Quote:

For some reason I though extra tropical cyclones were low pressure systems out of the tropics...Quote:

that's an cold core low where the low pressure goes all the way from the surface to the upper levels of the atmosphere, hurricanes are lower level in the atmosphere and actually need high pressure above them.
edit- for a bit of clarity, a 'warm core' like a hurricane, the air descends into the eye, thus warming it, in a cold core storm, the air is pushed up out the top and vented by the jet stream in this case.
Right, they are, just as RB said. But they need to originate in the tropics (ie., the perfect storm), then meander north.Quote:

I thought only dentists frequented the board...now we have a bunch of meteorologists too? Crazy.
The 3 ft. dump that hit northern New England in late October was actually a noreaster combined with the remnants of one of the hurricanes. Would this be the same thing?Quote:

While both were very powerful storms, there are subtle differences between the two.
