Helmet JONG question
So... I have been looking for about 3 years for a helmet which will fit on my huge (just measured at 63cm) oval shaped head and failed. I'm wondering whether the answer is to get something that nearly fits then file or cut away some of the padding material at the front of the helmet. I know this is probably a slightly bad idea because the padding's there for a reason but I'm thinking that my skull's thickest at the front and if the worst comes to the worst a helmet with slightly messed up padding is better than no helmet at all.
Anyone tried this? Anyone got views on whether this is a slightly bad idea or something which will mess up the whole structure of the helmet?
Or am I the only melon-headed freak on here?

....don't worry dude , you're not alone.
I too am the proud owner of a full melonhead. 62-63cm. Whenever shops use that stupid head measuring thing on me, i go off the scale and get a confused look on the salesmans face.
The two helmets i have found to cater for us mega-melons are the Boeri steez in black and the leedom limit cut xxl or xxxl. I use the xxl so even if your melon is bigger than mine, the xxxl should sort you out. I think there are some other Leedoms that should fit but i haven't seen this years range yet.
Don't mess with the structure of the helmets .... not a good idea.

I'd recommend the leedom limit cut as its a better design IMHO with good 'controllable' ventilation. Theres a tab on the top of the helmet you adjust to allow venitlation or shut it off completely on the super cold late jan days in the alps. I used mine all last season at temps right down to -20 + windchill with no problems at all.
If you want to get one, the only place i know that still does leedom helmets is 47 degrees in putney, london. They do mail order service but ya have to ring them up, no online shop. If you live in london, go check them out as they have a good range in stock.

Helmets that fit huge heads well
the largest sized R.E.D. helmets(xl?)
largest sized ovo-v(xxl?)
boeri xxxl-s
Ive never been the hugest leedom fan as ive always seen their products to not be of great quality. Id go for the boeri first, then the RED hifi, then the ovo v...from a safety standpoint, style they are all different so it gives you some choice.

well, i'm now the proud owner of a Red Shaun White Trace which is quite comfy if I take out some of the removable padding in it.
it does make my head look a bit like a bowling ball tho
