Another messed up binding mount ... advice please

I managed to pick up a set of 2003 s-lab hangl plate equipe racing gs 182's recently that came with a set of brand new consumer 916's from 2003.

I took them to my nearest place to get them mounted . In the uk , you only really have 2 choices . I went to Snow and rock. They mount 20 -30 pairs a day at weekends and have a full pro setup.

They mounted the bindings, i took a look at the work. The Hangl plate makes it easier to see how the mounting went.

The toe pieces were out by 1-2 mm to the left on each toe piece, no biggie.

The heel piece on one side was out to the left by about the same but still true, no biggie.

took a look at the remaining heel piece, the back of the heel piece was out to the left by 5-8 mm making it look slightly skew. I complained to the dude. he took a look at it. Pondered. said that hangl plates are sometimees not drilled right. The jig is mounted to the ski, not the plate so its ok.

hmmmm

i took another look, this time lining up over the heel piece and then looking at the distances. It still looked waaay out . The left edge of the ski was way closer that the right. I voiced this quite sternly but politely.

' thats fucked...' .

They said leave it with them for a day as they were closing in 10 mins. I said ok. They have now tried a total of 3 salomon jigs which they say they have tried and every time it lines up with the holes that they drilled.

I've now bought a set square and a metre long metal ruler to do some basic checks myself.

I'm wondering if i bought a pair of skew S-Lab skis which seems difficult to accept.

Is there anything else i can do to check the mount that they have done to be sure of their work ?

Any help would be appreciated, this is my first experience of messed up mounting.... :cussing: grrrr

take them to another shop maybe? if not to fix the problem at least to have a look at it. also, mounting 20-30 pairs a day might not necessarily mean theyy know what they're doing. it might just mean they're in a hurry.
where'd you buy the skis?

I bought the skis online from a seller in austria, a long way from here.

I've had a chat to snow and rock today. They're looking through their old backstock to find another pair of hangl plates from the same year as salomon cannot provide a spare top plate or a new whole plate. They haven't admitted it yet but i think they're starting to come round to the idea that they messed it up.

If they can't find a set of hangl plates, i'm going to get them to send them to Salomon UK and they can do an assessment of the skis and the mounting and make a call.

I think the best option would be for them to fit a set of this years Lab plates as a replacement for the hangls.

Does anyone know which is preferable ? Hangl plates or Lab plates ?

did you go to s&n in covent garden? i've dealt with a total '70s punk looking guy that looked like he dropped out of the sex pistols. at first i was pretty apprehensive, but he's done some non-standard stuff for me and done a good job every time and never charged me full price (i have no clue why). i'd def get a hold of the zz plates if you can if only for easier compatability.

I went to the one in bristol. nice bunch of people , techs seemed very knowledgeable but this episode has shaken my confidence in them.

I've used them a couple of times before with no problems, just had the skis fitted by a different guy this time....dammit

they need to replace your hangl plates. the lab plates require zz s-lab bindings to work properly.

yeah, it's always nice to use someone that you know. since they'll have a hard time finding a hangl plate, get them to give you the zz plate and also the lab bindings that you need for them :D

right, i finally got a result from Salomon UK.

They've ordered a ZZlab plate to replace the hangle plate. My only worry is that as far as i was aware, you had to fit zz binders to them for them to operate correctly. I spoke directly with Salomon UK and they were adamant that my s916 consumer binders from 2003 will mate correctly with a 2006 zz lab plate.

Have any of you guys tried this or will they just not go on?
