Tabletop overshoot to flat landing, compressed back?

Hey all,

I know this is more of a "gimp central" question, but more people visit this board and I think this is something many people can relate to. Anyway, last season being the crappy PNW season that it was, I was skiing Timberline's park and slightly overshot a tabletop coming up flat. Right after the incident my lower back hurt a bit, but not too bad. Since then I notice it after running every once in a while, but it's not too bad.

Three days ago I jumped of a bed (long story) that was maybe 1.5 feet tall, not large. However, 20 minutes later my lower back started hurting a lot. It got better by today and I went skiing- I maybe did 4, 4-5 foot mini-hucks onto very soft landings. Now my back is killing me. It's all lower back. Things that aggravate it include doing sit-ups or really anything involving bending at the waist. I'm thinking I could have compressed something (cartilage?) at the tabletop last year? Any ideas on what the root of the problem could be. I know to stay in shape, condition the core, stretch, etc.

A chiropractor could probably help you, they are not that expensive. Look into it.

definately get it checked out. I messed a jump last Jan and fractured my L1 and L2. I was lucky and fully mobile straight away but was in a corset for 3 months. Season over. I was in quite a lot of pain intially so I dont think you;ve done as bad a job as I did, but I would definately get it checked out.

x-ray first to see if you have a fracture and then possibly MRI to see if there is any damage to the discs.

I wouldnt go to a chiro but to a sports doctor. You dont want anyone touching your back before you know what's going on there.

Ya, I know. I thought my back was all better after this week and that it would react normally. Apparently this was not the case.

Good chiropractors take x-rays, and are quite knowledgeable. That said, a consult with orthopaedic physician specializing in back/neck would obviously be a good step.

DON'T go to a chiropractor till you see your regular doc and know that you don't have an old fracture (xrays) or herniated disc (mri). if it turns out to be neither of those, then feel free to get adjusted.

Sorry Skip, but although there some good chiropractors out there, that is not the first step he should be taking.

I second lph here. You should be going to your promary doc or a back specialist if you cen for an exam and x-rays. If they don't find anything on the x-ray, as lph said, they might order an mri to check for disc involvement. IOne other test they might look at is a bone scan to check for stress fracture and or the presence of an old fracture that may be trying to heal.

funny my fucked up back likes skiing because it's low impact. I lifted a little furniture 3 weeks ago and my lower back is just maybe a little better today. The doctor will prescribe physical therapy ,,,basically stretches. Seems like backs heal alot slower than other parts.
