WWMD: tunes to run the mile to?

For reasons I understand somewhat dimly, I am getting back into running for speed. I'm spicing up my typical runs (45-60 min) with nights where I'm focusing on shorter distances: 400m and the mile.

I'm looking for some new music to accompany these faster-paced pieces.

What I seek is something like classic Metallica. I am old enough that "Enter Sandman" and "Master of Puppets" resonate deeply in my adrenaline centers. My heartrate rises just thinking about those songs -- state-dependent associational memory. I'm open to new music, but what else should I listen to that is about the same energy/melody balance of Metallica? (Personally, I've been disappointed with the Slayer I've heard -- not quite enough of a tune there for me.) GNR has the good music, but not enough energy or hard edge. The ideal mile song will be about 5:30 (which is why Enter Sandman is a perfect match), though time is less critical than other characteristics.

Ideas, please?

Unfortunately I had to run the mile every week in 8th grade to "Everybody Dance Now" by C&C Music Factory. I highly recommend that you don't use that song. A little piece of me died just thinking about that.

Actually, 8th grade was the last time I regularly miled as well.

In the "No I'm Not Old" vein, I've found that some System of a Down tunes are basically what I seek -- although the silliness in some can be a deal-breaker.

Avenged Sevenfold (recommended on another thread here) is also good, though a bit hard to find.

Find a 4 minute or so song and try to complete the mile before the song ends!

If you could rig up the headphones so that they sounded like they were behind you, you could try "Close To You" by the Carpenters or anything by Michael Bolton.

Runnin' down a dream- Tom Petty

This was the song I always listened to before running the mile in High School track. Song sets for a great pace.

I don't listen to much rap or hip hop except when I'm running. Outkast - Bombs Over Baghdad is a great song to kick to. May want to check out some of the rap/metal mixes like Anthrax/Public Enemy's I'm The Man or Bring the Noise. Also, there's a couple tracks off the Judgement Night soundtrack that can make you pick up the pace. Oh, and I also second the vote for White/Rob Zombie.

I prefer running the mile to Beethoven's 5th.
