Seth Vicious mounting: Scale on skis is off 2cm?

I read this post by sid (and a lot of other posts) on the the K2 Factory Team forum:

"This winter while hanging out with McConkey, we were messuring some protos he had against some madians and found that the graph on the side is somewhat off of what the real center is, if you were truly going to center mount your skis. I am not trying to confuse any one with what I'm saying. From what we found by meassuring many different ways was that the graph is off by 2cm. I have been mounting my skis at +5 on the graph for a mid sole, when really it is only +3cm. So take it for what its worth. Stick with the graph for now, maybe it will change in the future. Truely you should always messure out you skis before getting them mounted to stay consistent with what you want for a mount. Forward mounting is still new to most people and shops, so use a tape and know before they are drilled. Sounds tech, but once you figure it out its no big deal, and if your on the board asking these questions you probably need to know these things."

I will be using mine for (hopefully) mostly powder skiing on tree-less sides, some tree skiing, and probably a small huck now and then. No park or acrobatic manouvres, and very little switch skiing.

Telemark Pyrenees will mount the bindings for me, and I'm thinking +2 (0) or +3 (+1) on the graph.

But is the graph really offset? Is it the same on all skis? Does the "progressive sidecut" have anything to do with this? Comments?

(Yes, I did search and find one SV entry in the "big mounting thread", but I didn't want to mess it up with questions)

Yeah, the graph is offset by 2cm. So +2 is really midsole.

I would worry about it. Everyone has been skiing these skis off of the scale since they came out and noone has had any problems.

While +3 on the scale may only really be +1, it is a mounting spot that a lot of people like.

So, go by the scale and don't really worry about this. If they change it later than it is something to worry about.

+3 sound like a good spot. I went +4 on my 189 to make it a little better in tighter spots. I'm barely 5'10" and these will be my everyday ski.

duude. Tape measurer does wonders.

i mounted +4 on my pistols last year and loved it. prior to that i mounted +1 and it was pretty good. more tail on the pistol was great thus i would guess more tail on the vicious would be good too... and more tail in real life would probably make for better threads around here in the pre season.

It's 92cm from where the green sidewall starts near the tip to the "mid sole" mark on the graph. My mounting point is 88cm from the same point.

Still no snow anywhere, but the skis look good leaning against the fireplace.

skied mine today at the +4 mark. They were awesome. Little bit of tip dive when it got real deep, but overall they were awesome. They ski great, did fine in tight spots, stable in chopped up stuff. Very happy with them.

so is the graph off on all K2 skis or just the Vicious?

if it was off 2 cm on my PE's that might explain why +2 looks like the right mounting location

not sure. Pretty sure it is on the Made'n and vicious. Not sure if it is on the PE or fujative. Best way to be sure would be to just measure it out.

In case anyone's interested: After a couple of days with proper skiing, I moved the binders 3cm back and got rid of the increasingly annoying nose dive. I now have them at "+1" on the scale, and am very happy with it.

(Of course, I'll be completely out of balance when gyrating off 50-footers now, but I can live with that ;))

Mine do the same tip dive, at speed. Mounted +3. How much do you weigh? What binders? Did the holes interfear? Have you noticed alot of instability for landing now?

I weigh 86kg (190lbs). Binders are Rossignol Axial2 140 Ti Pro. All the holes are exactly 3cm away from the old ones, so no problems there ;) No more problems when landing than when normal skiing (but then again I skied with a sprained ankle, and didn't do much jumping).

I have a friend who wants to move his +3 back 2-3cm as well, for the same reason I did.

(If I find out that they still dive a little at high speeds, I can always switch to my brand new Stöckli Stormrider DP :fmicon: )

its not really "off" its just core center and dead center are different things, people aruge that they are the same but they are not. Core center on a k2 is +7.5 and dead center is + 9.5 i see them as two totally different mounting points.

I mounted my pistols @ + 4 (189cm). The idea was to compensate the lack of ramp angle of Diamir Freerides with a forward mount. (I had them @ +2 before with Solly 914's but only skied groomers and park with that set up)

--> Now I can definately feel the tips dive. They were ok on some (quite thin, 10-15cm) wind packed buff we got to ski (week 4 in Cham) but on breakable crust I was in troubles (and yes, there was lots of that stuff)

My previous pow/big mountain skis were 193cm Head Im 103's (at +1,5) and those were some bad ass crud bustin' machines. That could be one reason I felt so much dive, and felt also that I could easily overpower the ski (I'm around 6 feet, 182lbs, not the most aggressive skier but I think I have pretty solid basic technique)

The forward mount makes them fun/easy on the groomers though, and very easy to manage on some steeper stuff, jump turning situations (although the long tail can be annoying at first even on that stuff). But strangely enough in the trees I had some problems too --> heavy, packed old pow & tight bushes --> long tail annoyed probably the most there. I felt like I couldn't get the proper "pop" to the turn due to the fact I'm "already" that forward on the ski, and the long tail kind of drags behind...

I ski quite alot of park, and guessed (before the mount) that I'm already somehow "used" to the more centre mount. But now I'm a bit pissed that I'm probably forced to mount them (3rd time) again, and this time thinking something like +1 or even 0! The other option is just wait and adapt --> I've skied them only 5 days with that set up, and probably if I ski them more, I won't notice the long tail that much anymore??? But still, hard to break old habits -> I'm used to the feeling that you have to really drive the ski. The "neutral" feel of +4 mount just feels strange to me!

Yes, I guess it's ok as long as you've got a decent transition and/or soft snow. Hardpack and flat landings + backseat on Diamirs --> sure destruction, I'd say.

Btw. I assume those are Gotamas on the said picture? Note the difference in tail lenght!(and yes, I want some 05/06 Gotamas before those vanish from the shops...Pistols have also too much sidecut IMHO [end of rant])
