I picked up a general outdoors magazine at Interbike that had a little feature on Shane's garage. A bunch of silly stuff (Stingers, monoboards, snowboards w/ski binders) and the one thing that wasn't numbered was a pair of all white skis. I'm pretty sure this is it, I'll try and take a photo of it and post it, but they looked to be about 185cm, much narrower tail than shovel, and a gentle taper to the tail, with a pretty extreme one to the tip with a big old tip.

I saw Shane in Portillo this summer on two different skis: the K2 Outlaw and a white fat ski (taped-up) that was the spat-in-progress-morphing thing. He said something to the effect that it was like the Spat but going to be more versatile if things work out.

Vulcan is the rumor but I would dig it if they called it the "McConkski". Has a nice ring to it.

I think the whole 'versatile' shit is fucked. That's K2 pushing on shane. They don't want to make a ski they can't sell a lot of, so no longer do you have a truly powder specific ski, but you have something 'that will work in all conditions' (translation: not as good as spats in Pow). I have no problem navigating my spats on the occasional groomer.

What's the point? If you want a ski to do it all, get some fucking pocket rockets.

but if they can make something as great as the spats, but with more versatility as a secondary bonus. then why not?

Granted, I'm no McConkey; but one thing I love about the narrower tip on the spats is how it slices and dices through cut up pow. Normal sidecut grabs onto the chunks and hooks you up. The reverse sidecut of the spats allows you to cut through the chop like a knife.

To make the spat more versatile, would mean taking away some of it's ability in pow. The feeling I got from the K2 dude I spoke with was one in which the spat was looked down upon as freakish and way too specific. Which it is, which is why it works well.

I already have skis that haul ass in pow: Made'ns, Axioms, etc. If all we get from K2 is their version of the Pow Plus or Prophet, then something the spat had is def. lost. I'll be holding on to mine.

I'm not saying the K2 ski will suck, who knows? It could be better. But the way they are treating it and describing it leaves me with bad feelings.
