I did not find similar thread but it is sorely needed. I fucking quit today. I'm not tying my family's future to a wagon train driven by mouth breathing room temperature IQ ghouls that would sooner throw you in the trash than incur a marginal expense. My colleague came down with breast cancer and needed to reduce her FTE to do chemo. They fucking told her no. Talented medical professional with a decade of experience, years of service at this place -taking care of their cancer patients-. The gall of these people. Just the fucking gall. Eat shit, I quit.

WA State with PFML? I don’t think we’re getting the full story here….

However - I’m an out outsider - but thru stories from friends and family it seems like the medical industry has some of the most hypocritical benefit / employment BS.
- Nurses at large national hospital groups only getting bare bones / cut rate medical insurance.
- OBGYNs with the legal minimum parental leave.
- Behavioral Health staff scheduling 50-60 hour work weeks.

Good thing these jobs are in such high demand it seems easy to get a new one…

It exhausts after 3 mo. Non-paid caps too. They were well through that. The part that you're not getting is this person was capable and willing to work just at a reduced schedule on a permanent basis that made their benefits slightly more expensive on a per-hour basis. And they got effectively pushed out for it.

And to your last point that's the craziest part! They then had others resign in protest going to other practices leaving the department half-staffed and were forced to pay a couple hundred K for temps and recruitment of now multiple replacements.

Anyway. This thread is envisioned as being dedicated to everyone who's decided enough is enough and has told the shitbags to pound sand.

One of the many downfalls of tying healthcare to employment - The execs probably have a revenue per FTE number they manage to… the reduced schedule tanked that individuals rate to below what they “need”…

Here's another: buddy's wife was an MD at a hospital locally, and had worked there for a few years with a great record of employment. She announced that she was having a baby and would be using full maternity leave... they laid her off 2 days into maternity leave. She sued, and won a large settlement. Mind numbingly dumb move by hospital admin.

And to be clear, that is the full, complete story. There were no extenuating circumstances.

Buddy at a former company had consistent beef with another colleague who TBF was pretty prickly/weird. Bad feelings on both sides escalated until one day weird colleague starts a yelling match with Buddy over nothing. Buddy has had enough and tells management " me or him".

Of course, management didn't have the balls to fire weird guy, so buddy quit. It took some time but he landed on his feet with a more senior role at another company in our industry. Then weird guy quit at some point after that, so 2x the churn they would have had otherwise. That's management!

Sounds like she already burned through her FMLA so legally not sure what avenues she has left. After that 12 weeks is up the company can pretty much tell her to pound sand. I, for the life of me, cannot understand the labor market in healthcare. People seem to be paid well, as far as I know there are plenty of people willing to learn the necessary skills, and the hospitals clearly have the need for the staff. Insurance picks up most of the tab. Yet it seems like pulling teeth getting any sort of credential and they steadfastly refuse more med school slots. So the same no. of doctors and nurses are minted every year for an ever increasing consumer base. I don't get it. Good on OP for taking a stand.

Wouldn't this be covered under the ADA? Cancer is definitely an impairment and reduced hours is certainly a reasonable accommodation.

If it is any consolation, my getting pissed and quitting a job I had back in 2013 led to an absolutely amazing new job that turned into retirement at 58 (at least 6 or 7 years earlier than I had planned). Though I've done a little dabbling here and there since 2018 for some additional pocket change, the dipshitted-ness of a couple of people I had worked with (and that were the cause of my discontent) ended up being the best thing that could have happened to me. Anyway, things seem to happen for a reason.

Good for you! The world would be a better place if more people refused to work for shit bag employers.

Couldn’t agree more. I quit my old job in January and my life is so much better since. I talk to my old co workers and know the only reason they stay there is that they’re scared or lack the motivation to try something new. If you know the job, boss, company culture sucks, get the fuck out.
