Excellent article. Thanks for posting. That’s a ski area actually run and owned by skiers. So refreshing. The Pitchers seem like really good people and true skiers. I can’t think of another ski area (outside of the co-ops) that have such a cohesive and pro skier/rider philosophy. I really need to make a trip and spend my money there.
We're feeling the intrusion of corporate skiing over here too. The "destinationisation" is a thing. On the other hand: two of my favourite hills have shut down ? n the last 5 years...
Love WC. First time we visited was 2014 and we camped in the lot when it was dumping (before #van life was a thing) and one of the guys plowing woke us up before the sunrise and said "hate to wake you. But we got to plow where youre at. There is a front row parking spot we just plowed you can move to" and we got that treatment for a few days. "Ski in ski out" at its finest. We rented it Pagosa and skied with the groms for a month last year and loved ever aspect of it. Got a 4/3 rental for the month for what we are going to pay for a week in Summit County this season. Pagosa has a great coffee shop right next to the "hippie" hot springs in town, a few really good restaurants. I can't recommend a visit enough.

Yea, great article about the Pitchers, but I'm still concerned about the ongoing threat to Wolf Creek from the McCombs family. There was a paragraph in the article regarding the fact that the Pitchers do not agree with the McCombs' ongoing effort to build a "village" next to the ski area, and there was a link embedded in that paragraph to another article from last spring where the McCombs had a major court win. The bottom line is that if that village is eventually approved, it will vastly change Wolf Creek Pass and the ski area, and it is unlikely the Pitchers will be able to manage the ski area in the same way that they do now. And, hey, what better time for the McCombs family to get this ramrodded through than in the next four years?

Also love WC’s approach of getting shit open early and then saying ski at your own risk.
We always stay on the Norte side, in hopes that storm with close the pass from pagosa. Has worked a couple times!

This same statement has been in articles about a village for 20+ years.

Rocaasaro. Never heard of it, but the terrain looks decent. If a Bora comes over the Adriatic sea.
Social media has also ruined Hallstatt near the Krippenstein. Chinese tourists seem to think it's some sort of Disneyland these days.
Resorts leveraging social media and influencers is proving highly effective for them and I hate it.
