Tempted to get back protectors myself and my youngest. I cannot see any cons except comfort. My oldest is required to wear one for comps so I have been pushing it more daily. Do you wear back protection while free riding?

I used to wear both back and hip protectors. If you buy the right ones, they aren’t uncomfortable at all. I did always modify mine so as to not have it wrapped tightly around my stomach. I would usually figure out a system where the back protector would attach to my pant belt loops. However plan on totally rethinking your layering system to deal with them. I never really had a fall where I needed them. But I started wearing them after watching Billy Poole die from internal injuries caused by hitting rocks while skiing. There’s a reason they’re required in comps.

I’ve been skiing with the POC vest type one for a couple years. No issues with fit, layering, or comfort. In fact, it makes some chairs (especially older lifts with straight slatted backs) MORE comfortable. The only downside I’ve encountered is that it is another layer and can make me run hot when spring skiing.
My kid wears a Shred flexi-back everyday training and has no problems with it. I ended up getting one cheap off an old racer that had one in a box. It’s pretty comfortable; honestly, it’s nice to have some protection from some of the idiots on the hill.
I am going to try a POC vest, I think. I got hit from behind Thursday. I am sitting here with separated ribs and lots of bruises. It got me thinking.Quote:

My kids wear sweet protection vests, I wear a poc vpd. Concerned mostly w a collision w another skier but have taken a granite induced trauma close to the spine it was a wake up call for sure. Back protector is comfortable. Like a helmet.
