Prescription Goggle inserts

I have tried putting contacts in my eyes with no success. For the last several seasons, I’ve skied with some older prescription glasses under my goggles and it’s worked OK. I wanted to know if any of you have used something like Sports RX goggle prescription inserts. I wanna make sure before I order these that it’s worked better than glasses and it’s worth it. If you have any recommendations for inserts that you’ve liked, that would be great as well.

I used sportrx inserrs on smith iox for a few years until my prescription changed and my goggles died. They're good for what they are but limit peripheral and fog easier than no insert. Better than glasses worse than contacts. I only wear contacts skiing and sometimes that means cursing trying to put them in for 15 minutes before going out.

Im about to just say fuck it and get my corneas vaporized.

I’ve used the Smith ODSxx prescription inset in Skline XLs and I don’t even notice them. No fog unless I’m hiking. I got mine at Optics Planet for less than a hundred eight years ago. I’m fifty seven and my myopia has stabilized years ago.

My wife has been struggling to see while skiing. Wears glasses but has never used contacts.

We are looking into perscription goggles, but this thread is making me question our decisions.

Is it a legit option? Can we get a lens that's tied to a script and put it in a legit goggle, or is that a scam all around?

Anyone have any success with this?

Get the Smith insert and compatible googles

Contacts are the best option. Sorry.
Not that hard to do. Soft disposable lenses. Make sure they’re right side out. Jamb them in your eye. Pull upper lid over them if necessary. Blink twice. Done.

Smith stopped making the fan goggles a few years ago. Those saved my ass on a ski vacation when I got a corneal abrasion from contacts. Which reminds me how awesome contacts are.

I'm sure contacts are a better option, but I been using a universal prescription goggle insert for a few years. The goggle insert rarely fogs, great optical clarity and is easily switched between goggles. The rare goggle fog events are always related to using a face mask that isn't adjusted correctly on below zero days.

Tell me more. I’ve heard the optical quality is really bad since the lens is so far away from your eyes that it’s difficult to get the prescription correct. It’s similar to holding your glasses several centimeters away from your eye.

The Smith Optics ODSx prescription insert sits on the dock that’s on the nose bridge and is the same distance from your eyes as glasses. It’s a really dialed system. All the Smith Goggles that accept it are the XL frames and there’s no fogging issues with the exception being that they will fog if you’re really warm like when boot packing. I’m not wearing goggles in those situations anyway.

Both daughter and I have used the smith inserts and we got them at SportsOptical in Denver if I recall. Daughter did pretty good with them. I struggled for many of the same reason noted above. The biggest issue for me was fogging - I run hot and sweaty and still had fogging issues when running them in my TurboFans (man I wish Smith still made those even though they had faults l).

I found that the Skyline XL and iO Mag XL fogged less than the Turbo Fan. The TF had a much smaller volume frame than the non fan XL options.

Good to hear as i just picked up a pair of iO Mag XLs to replace my dead turbofans. I'm back to contacts so that will be nice.

I'm happy w the inserts from Sport Rx. The biggest downfall is, for me, the inevitable major crash on powder days when snow gets inside the goggle. At that point you're pretty well phucked until you get inside and sorted.

I have had 2 sets of turbo fan and IME the wiring to the battery box and the box is ALL complete shit so the fan part did not last but its actualy a good goggle


SO if they had put a connector on the wiring where is went across the top of the goggle that would have been ideal and then they could have sold us a new box


my son the sled head has a goggle with a fan in it made for sledders I believe he said it was a A LOT of money like 500 dollars maybe

I’ve had about 10 days this season using over the glasses smiths with success. There’s been occasional fogging of the glasses, but I haven’t applied any treatments to the glasses lense. I haven’t done any major goggle-on traverses or hikes yet. I like that I can take the goggles off and have my glasses still on. Like I walk into the lodge and I can now actually recognize friends and family. For ski touring, I’ll probably not wear the rx glasses inside the goggle.

Crashing and filling with snow hasn’t been an issue because I don’t crash :P

Peruvian: The goggle insert lenses that I bought had calculated the focal length and pupil distance correctly so the holding your glasses away from eyes is not apparent. The lens clarity may be factor of how big the lenses are compared to regular glasses under the goggles. The online seller was e-optician.

Xxx-er - totally agree that wiring is total shit on the turbofans. I've had the same experience with multiple pairs over the years - after any decent crash I was always checking to see if the wire broke.i was able to warranty some and play around with solder gun on another but my pairs are all dead now.

No personal experience but my kid has had good luck with the Sport Rx inserts.

I’ve got inserts coming we’ll see how it goes. I’ve tried contacts and believe me they didn’t work for me.

Went with the Sport Rx inserts several years ago and really like them paired with Oakleys. Don’t have a fogging issue. Swaps easily between two goggles, one for bright days, one for foggy.
