In Sprocket Rockets the «Ask the Experts»-thread is a gold mine for random questions.

Do we need / want a misc thread in Tech Talk? In stead of making a «what …… do I want»-thread for every question?






Obviously, I have a question I need answered:

Picked up a pair or Arc’teryx Sabre gloves, but they don’t seem very warm. Especially the fingers seem very thinly insulated.

Comments / reccomendations? Looking for full leather palm/fingers, slim cuff, warm-ish, but not full on ice climbing-warm.

Current glove is a decade (?) old Arc’teryx glove with removable pile liner. Look similar to current fission SV. Still hanging on, but on the skin of its teeth

Sounds like you need more insulation I have 2 pair of cheap Auclair but they usually have enough insulation

what you can do is use chemical heater packs, I get the Grabber toe warmers by the carton,

I suggest the toe warmers cuz they will stick to the backs of the inside of my Mitt or glove and they don't fall out like hand warmers do

I had a pair of BD guide gloves that were too warm for the pnw so I moved them on, were a nice glove though.

Yes we need this thread. Ask The Experts in Sprocket Rockets may be my favorite thread on TGR.

Experts, what’s the best high arch, low volume footbed/insole to alleviate medial malleolus pain from the collapsing foot/pronating in a tele/ski boot?

With respect to the glove question above, I have resigned myself to just using an outer insulated mitten a size too big so I can also wear an inner mitt with some insulation(ie Arc’teryx venta mitt inside an older fission sv mitten)

Custom. I haven't found a stock footbed that's even close to fixing that issue for me. They're all to low.

I wouldn't say i was a Xspurt but I have a high arch/ low volume/ flat foot/ wide forefoot

IME the red Sole.com product has a lot of arch support , I sand all the grey foam off the bottom of the toe area so the footbed fits in my ski boots,

its pretty cheap and i can't tell the difference between my 300 $ custom foot beds and a 40 $ sole

Anyone use the thermic boot dryers? Do they heat significantly or should one not worry about it?

Sf, I’d get some free the powders or spring for hestras like the army goat leather model. No membrane in gloves is the way to go.

For boot/glove dryers— listen to this expert. Me.

Thanks for glove suggestions. The Guides look super warm and nice, but a bit more glove than I want. Have mittens for the few days with insane temps. In that class I guess the Fission SV is the main contender - as I have great experience with Arc`teryx when it comes to gloves.

Had a look at some Rab Khroma Freeride GTX. Looks sturdy, but a bit slimmer than the Guides etc. Any experiences with Rab gloves?

Have you looked at the Leki offerings? Expensive but nice stuff. The Lightning sounds like it might be close to what you are looking for, otherwise they have many warmer options.

Have two of these. About to order 2 more. They're great. Just enough heat and air. We take them on vacations with us.

Hestra makes my favorite gloves. Pick your poison. Flylow as a cheaper option. We have 5 pairs of the Unicorn mitten floating around. Buyer beware, though..... I'm not sure the quality is as good as it was a couple of years ago. The new leather doesn't look as nice.

Yup. We have those thermics that you can find from $50-100ish. Simple, work great, have not seen any issues with getting too hot and screwing up liners. All good.

No expert, but I agree w toast

But I can’t fit my foot + my decades old custom footbeds into some ski boots (or hockey skates), so I’ve had success w stock Superfeet yellow hockey footbeds which have lower volume

I tape thin shims under the rear half along the inner/medial side to increase the volume under my arch, and also get a longer size that fits my arch shape better and then trim away excess length at the toes

I’ll probably get some Graf/Sidas custom hockey skate footbeds for my touring boots, if their volume is lower than my current custom footbeds, but finding a pro shop that can make those can be tricky depending on your location

I really like the "Dryguy" dryer/warmer ones. ~$30 on amazon. Plus into the cig lighter on the way to the hill. Warm things up enough to get my Langes softened up enough to slide my foot right in. Work great for winter campering too. A lot smaller and more compact, just store them in the console.

Anything to do with bikes, skis, snowboards, surfboards...the answer always comes back to - just get the red one. It may not be perfect for your needs, but it will be red.

I got the MAXX I've used it with Intuition liners and no probelm, it works fine

for just gloves i mostly use one of those 15$ plastic things that sits on top of the forced air vent

What are some good, durable, ski poles with medium baskets, that don’t have ribbed dildo handles, but maybe have some kind of hooked tip to help with tech binders and such? Adjustability not required, but acceptable.

I just use these cheapos and wrap bicycle handle bar grip midway down the pole for sidehilling when touring
