How to not get killed driving?

People are fucking idiots. Reckless, selfish idiots. And every day they hop into their steel cage hurtling death machines and browse their tiktok at 70mph.

Vehicles are getting bigger, heavier, and with higher belt lines. Traffic fatalities are rising. Teslas are crashing and burning people alive inside because the door latches release by wire only

Has the above changed your choice in transportation? Do I need a 6500lb 3/4 ton to give my family a chance against a drunk coal-rolling maga in a lifted Ram? How do you reconcile your carbon footprint with feeling like you need to be rolling armor to survive the destruction derby that is the daily commute?

I'm like this close to buying a fucking Volvo.

The giant lifted trucks everywhere really are a safety concern. The fact these people can still only carry $15k of bodily injury and $5k of physical damage insurance is nuts. Personally I think there should be an increase in fees for these huge trucks and also that if a huge lifted truck injures someone that they face increased damages / additional liability. That 30 mph crash would have been a fender bender except the at fault party decided to put a 8” lift on a 7,000lb truck and killed the family in the Prius. If a truck is modified in a way that it isn’t street legal it should carry manslaughter or reckless endangerment charges.

Used to drive a tdi Jetta. Never felt safe in it. Passat was way more safe and comfortable.

An old friend had a Jetta bounce off his bumper in a35mph zone. Kid died on site. My friend barely felt it in his suburban.

If it was up to me I'd be driving a 40 year old Honda/Datsun/Toyota and enjoying 35-45mpg with cheap and simple maintenance. Unfortunately I can't because of those previously mentioned brodozers. I actually miss the raw simplicity and complete lack of distractions in my 81 Civic that I had to flog the ever living shit out of to get less than 35mpg but the thought of getting hit by a modern 3 ton Suburban shuts that thought right down.

Driving has traditionally becomes safer year over year except for like the last decade. MV fatalities per capita have been increasing; likely due to distracted driving… although I think it would have been much much worse without uber taking a dent out of the DD problem, WFH increases, and Amzn decreasing errand trips…

However, I think we’re not far from a turning point. Autosafety and self driving features are making their way down to lower trim packages - my base model company truck came with collision auto braking, lane keeping, etc… some UW student cut me off on a lime scooter and it kicked in and literally saved their face from catching pavement…

We’re not far from instead of vehicle ownership, one could have a waymo subscription and do all the tictoking they want on the commute.

So yeah - it’s scary out there - but the future is bright IMHO.

Last week we had another East bound driver in the West bound freeway fast lane. Driver was killed at the scene, the people they ran into survived. How do you react in the split second if it happens to you? Vibes to all who cleaned up the aftermath.

Agreed. In my particular corner of the Bay Area lifted trucks are quite popular. Last week I saw a Honda CRV that had been rear ended by one. The trucks front bumper was in the back seat of the CRV. Everything behind that was wiped out. Hope no body was back there. Trucks lifted that high should be illegal. We have laws regarding bumper height and impact speed. Not sure why they don't apply in this case.
