Have had good results from both Leatherman and Swiss tool in the past, but not against an ebay/no name brand and saving money too.
Looking for a PHD grad present for a buddy, who plays alot outside.
Needs pliers and a knife bade and a few other tools, 4-6" total length when folded
can't beat a leatherman wave.
I love my leatherman skeletool for daily use. Good pliers and knife + screwdriver bits. Plenty of mods available as well

Gerber mp400. Good set of tools and smaller size/weight in the pack. Too small for daily use though. I like the gerber opening mechanism, scissors and sheath better than leatherman, but all of that is just a personal preference. If you're willing to get it used, there are tons of cheap ones on ebay, sometimes with the sheath. Maybe from TSA seizures? I've bought 3-4 that way and they're always like new.

The Leatherman screwdriver will not be able to unscrew or tighten binding screws which need a lot of torque. Ask me how i know
Instead, i carry a dakine screwdriver with bits in the handle and very also pliers. Together they do the job and they are very light.

I also carry a Doc Allen’s Versa-Tool in my ski kit because it’s a better driver for bindings and it’s nice sometimes to have a grabby in one hand and a twisty in another
and the Skeletool is great for what it it is - my heavier tools are no better

I suppose it depends on application like skier, MTBer, hiker, etc. Some people really need a good screwdriver and some people cut stuff.
Useless opinion: I have several multi-tools/swiss army knives and some miscellaneous pocket knives, but (apart from bike tools), I have gotten more use out of a 6 foot length of paracord than any specific tool. Paracord makes a lousy gift though.

Makes a good compliment to the activity-specific tools I carry in my backcountry and mountain bike packs, and a great EDC in one's trouser pocket.
I got my groomsmen these as a simple gift, there's an option to engrave the blade which makes it kinda personal.

Only downside is the off center spinning process of using it — not great for that low screw parallel & just a cm off the surface of the ski, but doable
