Back when bindings were built to last forever.
My knees still hurt remembering skiing those at 13/14 as a teen in bumps.
I have a pair of 916's from ~04ish on some Salomon GS FIS skis I'm contemplating buying from the local thrift store for 60 bucks. Clean. They're even red. Hand-fondling them gives me as much confidence as anything. I don't think bindings fade as much as the industry wants you to believe. I mean-- Salomon and Look. I would have very little confidence in a Tyrolia or a Marker from 2004.
YMMV, and all that.

916 are bomber bindings. The 747 are even older is my understanding, so I hesitate.
I still habe two salomon STH Steels (916) in use, one on a Volkl Mantra 102 and one on a Shiro.
I would be pretty concerned about any oxidation to metal over such a long period affecting release. Maybe on a gapper day when you are just putzing around
Well, you can always pull the springs out and clean and grease everything. See if there's any dimes stacked in there if the previous owner was a real hero.
We've all got some old bindings we're still ripping around on, but I feel comfortable on them because I know their history. If I found a 35 year old binding in the wild, it would be a hard pass.

yeah (yes) - I may have misunderstood obiwan's OP -
I don't believe there is a new binding today that is better ( nor as well - built ) as the 747E.
I'm not sure what I would pair 'em up with
( QST, Rossi-sumthin' ; Maybe a Mindbender )
( fitting a brake might involve some creativity )

My 747E were bought in 1984. Just me, but I would not feel good about just pulling the springs and regreasing unless they were new old stock. Those were on my last straight skis and sold for $5 in a yard sale early 2000’s
I don’t know anything about the construction of the 747s or the model lineage, but if they are all metal, why not?
I ski just as hard on 1986 Look Pivots as I do with new Pivots. No joke. (I wouldn’t ski a pre ‘86 Pivot, construction changed that year.).
Also have an all metal Singer sewing machine from 1907 that is still giviner like new.
I have a 747 jig if anyone wants it. Narrow width, obviously.
The oldest bindings I still use are 977 era, and not many of those. I'm still using plenty of 997 / S900 era ones.
Well, it is my first 747 Equipe. So I guess I give it a try. I already use a Marker Racing 9.2 (10-20) on a metal 198 Katana with no problems at all.
Mount them, lower the din, drop a boot in and force them to release a few times. If they are smooth, they should be. Run them suckahs. Metal goodness.

I have some red 916s on my DD Bodacious. I have no idea how old they are or what they came off of, but they haven't failed me. All of my bindings are 916s that I got used from somewhere or other with the exception of a handful of STH16 STEELs that I got on closeout.
I'd get the thrift store 916s if the wing AFDs are good, and I'd use them. I probably wouldn't even bother testing them.
