I saw a picture and it was quite large and encompassing, super scary!
Where?
There is one pic on the SAC website. looks R2-D3ish?

I'm curious as to why this is listed as 'Outside the Forecast Area'. It is within the region they forecast for and it is not within the confines of a ski area (or any area where mitigation occurs). It is sidecountry but i guess they just feel sidecountry isn't really backcountry??

That's for sure in the forecasting zone.
I'm not a local...can someone tell me about the snow profile out there? This looks like a size-able windslab release that propagated decently wide. Was it sliding on a weak layer? Trying to understand windslabs a lot better this year, seems like this may be a stubborn one that seems solid enough on initial evaluation until all of a sudden it breaks deep and wide. That's scary.
What a fuck show..... @ Powdork, is this within the Heavenly Master Plan?Quote:
3 skiers triggered avalanche while skiing backside of Heavenly.
First skier triggered avalanche below others which subsequently triggered 2 more above the other skiers involved.
2 of the 3 skiers were collected in the avalanche and suffered major injuries. No burials reported. Avalanche ran the entire course of the terrain.
Aspect is facing south east in full sun exposure with gusty east winds present.
Snow at scene was heavy and wind effected.
And avalanches are still freaking cool. Much better photo.

Curious who submitted that report. Curious why SAC staff did not investigate.
Still confused about the number of incidents in the south lake area last Thursday.

From top to bottom as they are on the map

I am assuming the light green layer is indicative the boundary of Heavenly Valley. I guess I can see why SAC would be reluctant to do a full investigation if that is the case. Seems a shame as there sounds like quite a story here.
Not sure what the green is there. Doesn't match public lands, perhaps vegetation? Heavely's boundary is on the other side of the ridge.

The write up no longer refers to it as Outside the Forecast Region and has placed in the Freel Luther region as it should be
