New Band Members Playing Older Original Band Material Etiquette?
OK these Taylor Hawkins Tribute concerts have sparked some debate in the Rush groups. When Alex and Geddy play with top tier drummers like Omar Hakim, should that drummer play Peart's licks exactly as he played them or should the new drummer play them a little different so it's clear it's not Neil playing?
I saw The Who with Kenny Jones and Simon Phillips, and neither one played Moon's licks though they have the skills to where they could have.
I do think a tribute band should play as close to the original as possible because that's the whole idea. to look and sound like seeing that original band playing those songs.
Maybe OK if it's the dead musician's son.. then totally OK to play it exactly like dad (Jason Bonham, Taylor Hawken's kid)
Otherwise, don't poach all the chops from the guy you're replacing in the band, mic it up a little bit to give it your vibe too..
I can see the side of wanting to sound like it's still all the original members playing because that's what we fell in love with.. No 100% right answer here..
