Ug. As usually, solid report by CAIC. I think their summary describing a brief judgment lapse nails it. This is a mistake I can see a lot of people making.

One of the most difficult things in activities like climbing and skiing is to recognize when you are making an impulse decision and force yourself to pause and reconsider. And even if you pause successfully 99 times in a row, the one time you don't might fuck you.

Bruce Tremper opens up his book Avalanche Essentials with a chapter discussing this very topic. It really opened my eyes a little more to just how easily we can trick ourselves into a false sense of security.
