Another quiver thread, (moving to Utah)

So, I'll most likely be living at Alta this season. Being an EC skier, it puts me a bit out of my element. Only in the best way of course. I'm 5'11" 175#

My quiver as-is:

-177 P40 SL -Hopefully these will be useless in UT

-180 V-Pro -I'm sure they'd see some action when there's no new snow for awhile, or for a little park silliness.

-180 CMH Explosiv w/ Freerides -A solid setup. I'm sure I'll get loads of use from these at Alta. Touring, crud busting, shallow/heavy snowfall, some pow, etc.

My question is exactly how much I'll be kicking myself all season if I don't have a pair of bigger, fatter skis. Possibly quite a lot? I'd likely mount them alpine, and would consider the biggest skis. Probably spatulas? The reason I ask how much I would kick myself is because $500 for new boards & bindings is mighty steep when I'm jobless.

Apologies for the boring thread, but it's August, damnit.

It depends on how much of a gear ho you are.

If you are not a gear ho, the truth is you can have fun with the exploders on any day. You really don't need anyting else.

But if you are a gear ho, then you will want (and therefore need) something fatter on pow days (especially in UT).

mmm...get something bigger. p40s will be be good to have around during high pressure (if you're into that turning garbage), explosivs w/ freerides will fit in quite well and will be used a lot. If you're not too attached to the vpros, I'd take the binders and stick em on some pow boards >100mm. Alta is the reason spats, sanouks, and the like are made. You don't need p40s and vpros unless you can afford to buy another pair of skis w/o liquidating one.

Get something big...you won't regret it.

I'd probably keep the others, because I doubt I could get much money for them. The V-pros are pretty beat, but have life left. The P40s are just old, but also work well.

I also admit to enjoying the odd turn.

I'm a borderline gear ho, and I need all the help I can get. So I'll probably try to find some way into some spats.

I agree....you'll be fine on the Exploders to start the year and the gear will be flowing all winter long. You will have time to borrow/demo sticks and see what you like. Not to mention your style will probably change a bit....what you would like right off the bat might not be what you like when you have half a season living out West under your belt.

I'm sure you're right on the style change thing. Over the last year or two I've come a long way and I feel like my confidence and skill are at a point where a season out west will make all the difference.

I take it that it's not too hard to get ahold of different fat skis to try out at a place like Alta... ?
