Driving up that way to ski with the lady. Never been north of SLC.
Anything must stop and see? Hot Springs?
Looks like we go through Pocatello and Idaho falls. Headed back through SW Wyoming if there is anything cool going the other route.
Never been to Yellowstone either.

in idaho - craters of the moon (wild lavarock landscapes), ebr-1 (the first nuclear reactor to produce useable electricity, closed in the winter but i shit you not, that is my favorite tourist attraction ANYWHERE - and i've been to the taj mahal, the louvre, the hermitage, etc etc - THERE ARE FUCKING NUCLEAR REACTORS JUST SITTING IN A PARKING LOT), lava hot springs (meh, but might be worth a few hours stop)
the list is long, great drive if you take your time. How much are you allowing on both ends?
for starters get off the interstate, go up through Logan and hug the WY border for tetons etc, think the road through Yellowstone is closed in winter, never drove north of Jackson in Winter, but still you get the idea.
You arent missing anything in Pocvatelo or Idaho Falls

Skiing big sky sat/sunday if any mags are around. We are solid skiers.
Wow those tacos must be crazy good for a detour like that.
Pebble Creek outside of Pocatello is good for a quick ski if it has snow. They sold single ride tickets when I lived there so you could ride the lift up, tour the back side (where the better skiing is) and then ski back down.
Targhee. Easy detour.
If you are cyclists, there has to be a fatbike rental spot near Island Park. Just a guess.
If the weather's complete shit, which you're going to hope it is (for skiing's sake), you ain't gonna see NOTHING and the drive straight to Big Sky will be... sporty. Don't ask me how I know. :DQuote:

You can rent a snowmobile and get on groomed trails up high fairly fast (Two Top) in West Yellowstone. Going into the park would be cool too, all guided though.
Pebble Creek is a decent idea based on his time constraints but I'm wondering if it's brutally low tide there now.
if you are in a rental from SLC to BS, good luck in a storm. You will need even better luck on a sunny day with all the ice patches through Island Park area on rental tires.
