Size 15 boots

Sporkbunny inspired me to once again ask this question (which I seem to ask every year expecting a different result - I've never asked on TGR though)

Does anyone know of a telemark boot for a size-15 foot?
Does anyone have a size-15 foot and has managed to free their heel? How did you do it?

I want to learn the Telemark turn (I already smell bad, so I figure I'm halfway there) but have been railed by this foot size thing..

If not, does anyone know of an AT boot solution?

By the way, I have huge calves of solid muscle. That could be a problem even if I do find a boot in size 15. (If you care, I'm 6'6" 325 lbs - but losing weight pretty fast.)

3. Be prepared to become best friends with your boot fitter. Dude is going to spend a lot of time with a heat-gun and the dermal getting a boot to fit.
4. Try a lower cut boot—Scarpa T-2 or Garmont Synergy—to accommodate your claves.

That's where I asked last year. They tried, but ultimately weren't helpful.

These boots are really tight-fitting - at the end of the ski day I'm in serious pain.

Like I said last time, I saw a size 15 tele boot at the OR show a few years back...

I wear a size 15 too and took a season a few years back to tele. You have to resign yourself to the fact that you are not going to get a high end boot, I think I was using a mid-market Scarpa/Garmont (as you can see my tele stint was brief ;-). I rented at Sundance to start and they had a boot that worked. Might want to give them a ring and see what they are putting sasquatchs on these days (I'm 6'8 225). Good luck...b

See, I knew that this group was large enough that someone from here would have been in my position.
Do you remember any specifics? How long ago was this?
Did you actually take a sized-down scarpa (which supposedly use a large last?)

If you ever drive accross the state, I'd be happy to teach you to snowboard. I just have to say to all you skiers who feel such pain (toe,shin bang) that snowboarding is all too easy and soft boots are great. You just need guidance because the moves do not come naturaly and an instructor can limit your falls greatly. And Pube, I'm big enough to pick you up over and over for the first two hours. After that most people can get up off their toe side from there on.

You big footers just need a wide board, enough angle, and maybe even risers to snowboard effectively.

Scarpa makes its T-2 an lower models in a 32.0 Mondo which converts to a US men's 14. Using the rule of thumb that Scarpa boots run a size large (and from my personal experience this is true) that may give you a 15. Sorry, it looks like no T-1 or T-Race in your future although the T-2 may work better for you given your calves. Now finding a pair in stock somewhere to try on is another matter entirely.

shell size teleboots. If you can get your foot in the shell, then the newer conformable liners will probably work. Otherwise, get the biggest pair and get a boot fitter to make them work.

specifics- it was a blue boot :biggrin:

I believe it was a Garmont and it wasn't a 15 (probably a 13/14), but it fit just fine and I am a true 15. It was no T1 in that it was pretty soft, but was good enough to get me teleing on everything I could on an alpine set up. I use a stiff race boot for alpine, so I had I stuck with tele I probably would have been frustrated that there are no high end boots big enough.

As for snowboarding- no thanks. Been there, done that and toe drag was too annoying. You want to feel like a real gaper, go cruising around on a huge board with risers and still have your toe drag throwing you down unexpectedly. The perfect compliment to that set up would have been some puffy bibs from GI Joes. I already look like a freak in the tramline, I don't need to be flailing around on a sheet of plywood sized board to reenforce it...b

I have seen some mondo masters rocking on snowboards before. Sorry it did'nt go so well for you be.

I actually own a pair of snowboard boots. Someone gave them to me for free.
I just need a snowboard and bindings.. and risers, I guess.

The reason I haven't done it yet is, as a practical matter, I'm fat - and from what I can tell watching friends, fat ain't friendly if you're a snowboarder..

When I lose weight I'll definitely give it a try.

As far as toe drag, I actually seriously looked at getting a carving board, where you can position your boot at such an angle that there would be no overhang. Problem was that finding alpine snowboard boots in my size is even harder than finding telemark or AT boots.

You can angle any foot position you want. I am more comfortable with a more race-like set up. some guys prefer duck foot, some with both feet at 90 degrees. This one guy I rode with at Holiday Valley used to sport the full on race stance in soft boots. He absolutely ripped, switch too. It just takes getting used to. As a skier, it feels more comfortable.


As far as being too fat, c'mon. My bro in-law has a size 14 foot and weighs 250+. He rips just as well as anyone on a snowboard and a wakeboard. Granted, he does pull the hell outta the boat though.

Right.. I actually believe that, but that's not what my concern was..

The actual snowboarding I'm sure I'd be fine.. But when I see snowboarders doing other things, like get up from a fall, or try to cross a flat section, I lose wind just watching them. It's kind of hard to explain.. hopefully you understand what I mean..

just as long as you don't eat me when you're finished. :biggrin:
