Ipod playlists MIA

Any Ipod geeks here that can help me out? My computer crashed recently and I reinstalled everything. I did not have a back-up of Itunes though. When I reinstalled Itunes my playlists (of course) did not appear. They are still on my ipod though.

Any advice on how to re-synch so I can have my ipod match my itunes again? I can't see the musak I purchased either, or the library even.

I have been poking around Itunes help but didn't see it. I figured it might be an FAQ since people have to upgrade computers all the time.

Grrrr! Wish I had backed that sucker up. :(

Here's my best guess on what you can do. This is a program to rip stuff of your iPod and back on your computer...other than doing something like this, not sure. If there's no backup(believe me, i feel you pain) then it's pretty much gone...UNLESS you want to spend mega $$. Anyways, not sure what backup program you have but i use "Backup" which was bundled with the mac. There are also some good free ones. Good luck +++

Actually...I was poking around my ipod files and discovered that if I navigate to my ipod device on My Computer and right click the Ipod_Control folder then go to properties...I un-check the "read only" and "hidden files" and Viola---there are all my mp3 files (albeit in separate folders, a bit of a pain). But now I can copy these to itunes I think and/or back them up to my external hard drive.

Silly Apple, hiding the files like that!

When you plug in the ipod, doesn't itunes ask if you want to synchronize with it?
wouldn't this also synchronize playlists??

Coreshot, once you wipe out your itunes folder (which my computer did by dying on me) it's all gone. A new installation of itunes will not synch with a pre-populated ipod.

What you have to do if (a) your computer crashes or (b) you get a new computer is re-populate your itunes library and re-build your playlists. A big PITA! But anyway, so far so good. I've been able to un-hide my mp3 files and am in the process of xferring them into my external hard drive to back 'em up. Then I will import them from the external hard drive to itunes.

There is a way to make your ipod behave as an external drive btw. This is done by enabling disc use in Preferences. However, my "enable disc use" option is greyed out because things like that always happen to me. Luckily I have discovered this work-around and conveniently have a portable external HD.
