Matching my Dynafit Vulcans

Well to start with, I have a average foot, thin ankles and high calf so fitting skiboots has always been a issue for me especially resort boots. However, my Dynafit TLT6's and my Vulcans fit great and fit great in the ankle and lower calf. It is not the liners but the shells are just lower volume in the cuff. Now getting more specific, My 2015/16 Vulcans just ski very well for me, drives big skis and has a nice progressive flex but powerful too. WTBS, I don't ski them resort as my pin skis are wimpy and just afraid of skiing Speed Radicals at resort speeds. OK, my resort boots are Technica Cochise 130's latest generation with Power wraps. Fit is decent but the boots are very upright and I can't flex them, so I always seem to be fighting them to keep over my skis. I am not a weak legged guy and 195#. So, after a lot of time experimenting with these boots, heel lifts, spoilers et et I decided to try my Vulcans in my resort skis and yeah not a good idea putting a AT boot into a Alpine binding. But, I have STH's and I was able to adjust the bindings so there might be a degree of safety. Yesterday went out for a session and it was firm and variable and everything worked amazing but mainly was able to drive my skis with the ability to flex my boots and forward lean. Now, sure could just retire my resort boots and just ski my Vulcans but IMO, risky and not going to ski pin bindings at the resort either so new resort boots are on the horizon. What should I look at and or any way to modify my Cochise 130's?

yeah I find the same things with Vulcan, I ski Vulcans/Verts at the resort sometimes mostly it depends on what ski I want to use but conditions at my small local hill are mostly soft/no crowds ... so far no problems

I've seen a lot of race course workers putting AT boots into alpine bindings, mostly it was those garmonts from 10 yrs ago but I wouldn't

I have had good luck with the dynafit Khion/Beast. I also have TLT6s and previously had 1st Gen Vulcans. I think the Beasts ski marginally better than the Vulcans but the Vulcans walk a lot better than the Beasts. I do short resort uphill laps occasionally in the Beasts, but prefer the TLTs uphill.

If your foot fits the dynafit mold, maybe try those. Some have had good luck and others have not. For me, it's a great option for inbounds and slackcountry. I ski them with beast 14s, Radical 2.0s and DPS Wailer RPCs. Feels like plenty of boot for me.

My only complaint is that I've recently developed some sort of clicking noise which is either from the boot or my radical 2.0 toe piece. I've been speaking to Salewa about this and I think they are going to have me send the boots in for inspection.

The Cochise have alot more volume than the Vulcan. I tour in Vulcans and TLT6s and use Nordica GPX for alpine. The Nordica Doberman & GPX as well as the Tecnica Mach 1 were boots that fit well for me when I was looking for new alpine boots two years ago. Go to a good boot fitter and see what they still have in stock. You might be able to find a boot that works for you at a pretty good discount right now.

How does the Beast/khion differ in fit compared to vulcan in your opinion?

cuff/shaft/volume
ankle pocket width/volume
instep height
midfoot width
forefoot width

What does the best bootfitter in your area say?

I also ski in Vulcans, and I have also been in alpine boots that are too big for my skinny feet. My feeling has been similar to what you describe - I try to flex what should be a reasonably soft boot but can't. I think that my ankle does not line up well with the pivot on the boot, so the leverage just doesn't work out. My guess is that the cochise just doesn't fit you well.

If you are serious about getting new resort boots, take auvgeek's advice and find a bootfitter and get a good shell fit.

But, if you like your vulcans and they have a few years of life left, why not just put some mnc bindings on your resort skis and use the vulcans?

OK, thanks for the replies. I think I will rephrase my inquiry, what Alpine boots are you using if your AT boots are Vulcans and you love the fit and performance? For me, not going to refit my Alpine skis with the new Soli AT/Alpine bindings or any other dual purpose bindings. Just a waste of $$ as my Alpine gear will never see any touring as basically I like my STH bindings and have been on Solis forever with great luck. As far as hooking up with great bootfitters, Sure, been to plenty dealing with liners and molding and might go back to one that I am dealing with in Incline Village but, just want a starting point with advise on what others here are using with my issues. Well, I like the Vulcan in the more upright position with a low ramp tech binder. I ski the Lange ZB plug with FKS (with toe shims installed) in the resort, but it's pretty upright too. So if you felt like the Cochise had too little fwd lean, then we have totally different needs, despite both loving the Vulcan.

Fortunately, it's pretty easy to find narrow stiff boots with low volume ankles and reasonable forward lean. I don't know which boot has the smallest ankle volume and a low instep -- maybe someone else here does, but that's why I suggested working with a good bootfitter. In lieu of that, I'd try on the detuned racing boot from most companies: Atomic Redster sport, Head Raptor and Dalbello DRS (used to be called the Scorpion) are all decent starting points. And a zipfit could help take up volume in the ankle.

Lange RX130 LV w/powerwrap

I'm in Rossignol ZB plugs, which certainly fall into the low-volume category but can be a bit of work to get to fit. You can probably find something like the Lange LV boots (or any of the consumer pseudo-plug boots) that might work. Consider trying on a shell size smaller than what you have been in.

Some big fitting Dallbellos the surge which they no longer make but they are wide up front and they did go down to 24 and they come with a powerwap liner and a heel insert to take up room, this season i ductaped piece s of PVC hose inside the shell to take up a little space

Going from an STH 2 to a Warden MNC is two additional holes in the toe and those front two holes are spaced a comfortable distance from the from the front two holes on the STH 2.

If a boot is working for you and the only challenge is fitting it to some of your skis, I don't see why you'd go through the "fun" and expense of dialing in a new boot when you can fit Solly Wardens to your skis that work with them. I'm guessing you might even find some even up trades (STH2 <--> Warden MNC) on gear swap.

What's the worst-case? You drill two extra holes in one pair of skis and discover that you don't like the setup for one reason or another? It seems like the lowest risk path to happiness.
