TR: 10 years in Utopia

Got out last Saturday with a few friends to celebrate the 10th anniversary of discovering "This

We headed up to the Uintas to enjoy a change of scenery from the central Wasatch, spotting a nice line on Mt. Baldy's NE flank from the road.

Some other lines existed in the hood, but we figured shorter approaches always beat longer ones, so the choice was made.

We ascended the sizeable snowfield,

climbing 1100' to reach it's upper most skiable terminous,

we traversed around to the saddle between Baldy and Reid
for some more fun.

I learned something today. The Uintas are the only mountain range in the US that run east-west instead of north-south. Normal programming will now resume.

Nice pics BTW. Astonishing to have that terrain so close to SLC.

The Uintahs are the only mountain range in the [continental] US that run east west ... the Brooks Range in Alaska does so as well.

That certainly is the place. How long does it take to get to the uintahs from SLC? Are they crowded or do they provide the opportunity for a lot of solitude?

1 hour. Total solitude in the winter except for sleds. But much of it is off limits to sleds because of wilderness.

Hey, Telemark, have you seen that house on 1300 S and maybe 200 E with a big Gator flag hanging from the porch? The house looks like it was plucked right out of the student ghetto in G'ville.

Regarding topographical Utah peculiarities, I also understand that Utah also possesses the only river in North America that runs true South to North -- that being the Jordan River between Utah Lake and the Great Salt Lake. Evidently so named because it resembles the Jordan River in Israel/Jordan area. All other rivers supposedly run N-S, E-W, W-E, or some variation of those directions, but not from the South TO the North.
I don't know if it's entirely true, but I've heard it from time to time over the years I have lived here.

From what I read, the Uintahs are the largest range in the contiguous US that run east to west. There are bigger ones in ALaska and smaller ones in the lower 48. As with any superlative statement, you just have to make sure you qualify it enough.
The statement for the jordan river is probably that it's the only river in north america that runs true south to true north from a freshwater lake to a salt lake and that is named after a river in the middle east.

HooBoy. As it turns out, much like many urban legends, the Utah Jordan River claim isn't even close to the truth. According to the The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 2001, the Jordan River in Asia doesn't even run South to North; it's just the opposite, like most of the world's rivers.
Much like skiski said, about the only trusim I can tell from a google search is that the Utah Jordan may be the longest S-N river in the world that runs from a freshwater lake to a saltwater lake.
