"That trail is a F------- Travesty!"

So we got a few folks together for a fairly big ride in Park City yesterday. We all parked at the Canyons and rode the bike trail into PC. Properly warmed up, we head up Spiro and start to suffer. There is a new lift going in so part of the Spiro trail is detoured a bit. More climbing in some serious heat/humidity and we get to a new section of Spiro. As we wait for the group to get back together, our man of the year, Stump, has a bit of a problem with one of the new, flat corners. As he pulls up to the group, Stump sets the stage for the rest of the ride: "That trail is a Fucking Travesty!" I haven't laughed so hard while riding in a while.

We continue on and really enjoy the Mid-Mountain trail. We had a few competitive types with us so the pace was somewhat spirited. All in all, that loop is killer.

What is not so killer is when your bike starts to slow for no reason. AG and Rot were pulling a pace for the last few miles that was bordering on frantic. I felt some slipping in my hub but thought maybe the driveline was just dirty. Well, things got worse and as we got to the gondola at the Canyons, my rear hub locked up completely. I tried to go on but climbing with a locked hub was out of the question, as was descending (unless I took the chain off). After some colorful venting on the trail (some hikers got a kick out of what I felt about my bike at this moment), I turned around and rode the Gondola down to the parking lot. When we got back, I looked a bit closer and found I had ripped the hub body in half! I can honestly say I have never done anything quite that drastic to a hub before. If anyone is interested, it was a new Atom Lab DHR wheel set, maybe 10 rides on it. Has anyone else ever torn a hub apart like that before? I'm very curious as to why it did this; I'm going to take it apart today and then take it back to the guys at Atom Lab on Tuesday (they have a warehouse in Orem).

Even with the mechanical, a great ride was had. Although, it did turn out to be a "Fucking Travesty". :D

That detour was a complete and total travesty. I think that was the sandiest I've been on a ride since my midmtn to john's bushwhack/snowbank-fording back in early June. Despite all the sand and technical difficulties (I had my own set of issues with shearing off a wishbone screw and having rear tire problems), it was a very good ride. Miles and miles of rolling singletrack, beautiful views, good crew to ride with.

not being able to hang with stump is the travesty in my life...... the kid is gold!

I was expecting to hear that you rode the Crest and saw the "modifications" that have been made to the spine. If you haven't seen it yet, words just don't do it. Don't worry too much, the crux remains...but just wait till you see it.

I think most of us had some sort of issue, yet it was such a fun ride overall it didn't matter. I loved as we're coming around a corner and yet another steep climb comes into view, Mr.AG yells "no fucking way! You have got to be kidding me!" later in the car I was laughing about how pissed he was at that particular hill (no lie, he had to expend more energy yelling at the trail than he did pesaling up it...) and I said, we've ridden this trail before you know... "Yeah, but I REALLY wasn't in the mood for another climb." We noticed. ;)

I've gotta say I've never pedaled so hard and had so much fun, especially once we got to mid-mountain and we started getting blatantly competitive. (My apologies to Yentna and Stump who probably weren't adequately warned about how things tend to go when riding w/Rotney. ;) ) Normally I'm not in good enough pedaling shape to be in that mix, but apparently all the recent riding has paid off. Rotney dropped a chain on the last climb and I got a rare chance to take the lead and sprint to the lodge. Which is normally the sort of thing I roll my eyes at as they're sprinting away and say "can't we just ride at a normal pace? Damned testosterone freaks... ;) But as it turns out, when you've got the legs, it's way fun... :D who knew?? ;)

DH runs afterwards were tiring, but we did coaster races and it was fun as hell, and probably the best thing I've ever done to improve cornering. Today was a blast too. I wrecked hard in the triple drop on Thieves, made my elbow temporarily swell to twice its size, but went right back and cleaned the whole run. And then called it a day for DH, found some ice and switched to learning to ride my new DS hardtail. Which was fun - it's so damn fast...

Yentna showed up this afternoon and we rode a bunch of variations on what they might use for her sport course. She's gonna kick ass! :) (on her sweet new bike)

Can't wait for next weekend!!

Rode Spiro last week up to the Mid Mountain trail. Climbed for about 1 1/2 hours and called it good. That trail just keeps going up, and up! Screw that crap!

No, it's on the new DH wheel set (DHR I think). Very burley and a lot of DH'ers are using them. I figured one on my trail bike would hold up for many years. The only thing I can think of is that the bearings / cogs completely froze and then the thing just tore itself in half. I'll get some photos up later, I think you will be amazed.

i'm sure i will be. i've been riding on a trail pimp as my back wheel for a while and it seems plenty good. havent had any issues with the hub. really i've only heard positive stuff on atomic lab, so i was surprised. but, you can break anything as far as i'm concerned.

Atomlab's good to deal with anyway. Mr.AG brought it to their warehouse this am and they instantly swapped him for a new wheel. Said it was going back to the factory to determine what the issue was. Yay for instant warranty turnaround though. I just got 2 of their wheels for my dh bike. I think it was just a freak thing.

No, after our XC ride we drove over to deer valley and did DH runs. There are no DH runs at the Canyons that I know of and park city's lift is so damn slow you might as well walk up -it's faster. Not to mention they don't have any trails that require more than an xc bike. Deer Valley is excellent though.

Cool. I wasn't sure if there was good lift-served in the area. (Not that I know anything about it at all.)

Just got my replacement computer (hooray for the old one breaking enough to earn a brand new one!) so I'm a bit late joining this hurrah. Anyway, yeah I wasn't quite sure what I was getting into for the ride, I was told "it's long, but the only real climb is the first mile of Spiro." Bullshit, we climbed forever. Got to Thaynes and asked if the climbing was over, and Mr. AG pointed up way above our heads and said "we're going up to that rock band" though to be honest that climb and the rest weren't so bad, they just went on forever.
But....I was dead last on the climbs and always caught up to everyone as they were taking a break and happier so I missed out on Mr. AG yelling at the hill. Thought I was the only one suffering so badly since you all seemed so chill when I caught up.....I just remember coming around a corner and seeing yet another climb, we'd been climbing for two hours, all I could think was "when the hell are we going fucking down!!!!!
But all in all, it was a really beautiful ride, with fun people who (thankfully) didn't mind waiting for me on the ups, and I had a blast. Kind of glad I didn't know what I was getting into since I might not have gone had I known. I'd do it again.....

Heh. Well I knew I wasn't going to convince you to ride by saying "we'll be pedaling our asses off for a couple hours" but I figured you'd dig the twisty stuff and descents enough to enjoy it regardless... :D

That should work - we'll work out the details as it gets closer...

I missed you by a couple of . . . . days. After work last Wednesday, I chugged up Spiro - love the the detour where they must have gotten ten people to make a few passes on foot to flatten the grass - to Powerline, Mid-Mountain, Red Pine lodge and down Holly's. When I got back to the office I was cooked, but it was a great ride.

I would have sworn I posted a short thread about this last week, apparently not. :confused:

You did post a small thread - it actually inspired me to suggest the midmtn trail to the AGs Saturday night. However, if you had mentioned that detour, things may have been different.

Man, I'm losin' it.

And if AG had mentioned the gentle climb up Spiro, certain others among us wouldn't have gone with you and what fun would that have been.
