I'm buying a new wheel set for my x-country riding wife, 27.5, and was going to go Stan's Arch MK3, but my builder likes those Velocity wheels. They look good, and seem to have maybe "stolen" some of Stan's ideas. Anybody have an opinion? Other wheel sets I should look at?
I've built a couple wheelsets up with Velocity rims. In my experience they've been pretty easy to build -- round and relatively true. And very durable. Good value. The Blunt has been out for a while I believe so I would think its pretty established if you look around for reviews
I bought 2 Blunt SS rims. I built one up. I badly dented the rim within a couple rides. They're like butter. I could bend it back by hand. I bent it back and rode it for a little longer. After a few more rides the rim was completely shot. Sold the other rim on ebay asap. Worst rim I've used in a long, long time.
To be fair, I'm a 200 lb basher with little to no flow. But I do have a lot of experience with lots of different rims and I can't think of one worse.
hard to go wrong with the stans rims, build up nice, normal spokes, resonalble price vs quality vs weight. Also set up tubeless well

The Blunt SS is light and yes butter. Depending on what you consider "xc" and how aggressive your wife is they'll likely be pretty good.
I abused a rear Blunt SS rim pretty damn hard here in Vancouver and yes it took a bunch of dents. It was ridden a bunch of days in the Whistler park and raced on it. For the weight I considered it to be a disposable item for the type of riding I was using it for.
I wouldn't hesitate to build another set for XC riding and I'd easily build up a set for my better half for her one bike xc/dh/park/enduro riding.
The Arc MK3 is likely a touch stronger but if your builder has the Blunt SS at a better price I'd go for them.
