They keep the KIAs in our local VA cemetery separate from the rest of the vets buried there. I'd imagine all VA cemeteries are the same. If you go to one this weekend, you might ask someone there if they know where and pay your respects.
I've done it a few times, always humbling for me.
Tyler J. Trahan. My friend from boot camp. He went the explosive ordnance disposal route and was eventually attached to a Seal team. He was killed two weeks into his first deployment. He was an incredible person and 22 years old.

Not a relative of mine, but for some reason this sailor's story has always intrigued me:
Seaman Leonard Ray Davis of Tempe AZ. On April 17, 1972 was killed in action while serving on the destroyer USS BUCHANAN. The destroyer was offshore providing Naval Gunfire Support for some US Marines near the DMZ. A Marine company was overrun by an entire battalion of North Vietnamese regulars and the survivors were headed down a river to a beach where helicopters could pick them up. 5 North Vietnamese tanks appeared on the beach to cutoff the Marine survivors. The destroyer moved in so close to the beach that they came under direct fire from shore. The tanks were destroyed and the Marines were rescued. However there were 7 wounded and 1 killed onboard the BUCHANAN. Seaman Davis was only casualty in the entire Vietnam War involving an ocean going vessel and small arms fire from shore.

Robert F. Stryker (November 9, 1944 – November 7, 1967) was a United States Army soldier who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War. The Army Stryker vehicle is named in his honor. He was in my unit the year I was in Nam, jumped on a claymore protecting his other squad members during an ambush at Srok Rung.Attachment 206940

James W Cawley. March 29, 2003, Fallujah. He was a great friend and taught me many things that I carry with me to this day. Not just how to fight, but how to be a dad and a husband. Huge loss for us. I think about him every day.

Let's include the vets whose minds were wrecked by TBI and PTSD and committed suicide or suffered other violent deaths years later. Those are KIA too, IMO.
My uncle Francis. Killed on d-day, when the toothpick glider his platoon was in exploded when it hit the ground and prevented him from killing even more Nazis. He served in Africa and Italy prior. My mom wouldn’t talk about him and absolutely refused to see Saving Private Ryan because of the war memories
I spoke at the dedication of the new headstone for Joe Harrison, a WWII commando. His unit was tasked with terrorizing the enemy, sometimes by killing them at night with a knife while they slept. A bomb broke both of his legs and made a cripple in Nov 44 and he was discharged after 5 months in the hospital. In 1950, Joe took his own life with a knife. Here's to all the Joes.
