Alright, trying to setup a wireless internet at work...I'm pretty much a computer JONG. I would like to send a wireless signal about 500 yards (it's a summer camp, so into several different building, and through a bunch of trees). Currently we have an 802.11b wireless router, but the signal doesn't go far enough. 500 yards is going to be a challenge without getting into commerical wireless and directional antennas with repeaters.
Get WiMax...oh wait, it's not out yet. :D
Sending 802.11 over long distances is definitely posssible. It's been done for years. Do a google search for "long distance 802.11," "long distance WiFi," or something similar. You'll need line of sight though.
Tried this one last summer, at summer camp also. I found the odd tree didn't do much but if its an area you can't see through your stuffed. I ended up with the big Rabbit ear atennas and trying to get the router as high as possible - ended up in an atic window, this doubled the range!...couldn't get 500 yards though - best of luck.
Build a pringles cantenna. Or, if you want, you can buy one that someone else has assembled.

May sound funny, but they work really well (just ground them). We've got one running at least 500 yards right now at my parents cabin.
Lots of coffee cans and kite string.
I got a D-Link setup - half the distance at a max but it also strongly depends on the environment.
i would like to use this thread to thank the people who named their networks 'NETGEAR' and 'linksys' for providing me with free internet for the last two years...
that ^^^ is why I did not buy a wireless router. Nothing like service stealers. :fuckyou:

It's a tough call. If I were in your situation, it's hard to say I wouldn't be a leech. It's like taking the fruit that fell over the fence into your yard.
But if I was paying for the connection, I'd be pissed if someone was leaching. (Of course to prevent it, I'd create a secure network).
So is it their fault for being dumbasses, or are you sketchy? ;)
It's definitely their fault for being dumbasses. They should be grateful that you're only stealing their service and not their credit card numbers.
