Anyone ever hear of the ski area that was on Palomar Mountain in 1966?
Has anyone ever gone up there to go sledding or skin around? Sounds like it's possible but I can't fond anything on the internet about it.

I can't find on the maps or airphotos the likely location of that old ski area and didn't know there had been one up there. The 2 high points at 5600 1.25 miles south of the observatory don't have any obvious clear cuts on north slopes in the airphoto, but 40 years is plenty of time for it to get over grown. Haven't spent much time in the Palomar mtns, but from what I have seen there is very dense vegetation on north slopes. Just found a youtube video of some guy snowboarding in a burn area up there several years ago. Also looks like there is ok terrain off the high point of 6k ft, but access would be long(from hwy 79 side?). Seems like it would be better to go to the San Gabes at that point.
I have done xcounty skiing and snow camping in the Lagunas. They are mostly flatish, but while mountain biking I have found a slope on wooded hill that is mostly free of under brush and should be steep enough for about 200 vert ft. My idea would be to ski it after work with mountain bike lights as headlamps. Don't think it would be worth a weekend day trip unless up there for snow play with the kid or something. Access is really easy and sometimes the Laguna mtns get snow when the LA mtns do not.
I have seen video/photos of people skiing the fire road from the top of Cuyamaca. To much brush to get far from the road. But the state is doing some thinning in the area, so might be better.
did you email Peter Brueggeman? he might have the lat/lon of the old runs.
I emailed some Bonnie that knows the history of the mountain. she just said that there's nothing left and everything has grown over. I my mind I imagine a Ski Palomar logo that's in the same font as the Windnsea Surf Club.

I'll ask my wife's family next chance I get- they are several generations deep of lifelong SD residents.
Maybe hit up Andy Lewicky at sierradescents.com
Don't know about Palomar but the San Diego Ski Club had a tow rope and a small "lodge" on Mt Laguna in the 40's and 50's. Trying to pull up their website , it used to have some historic photos and stories .
I have done some touring in the Lagunas but no riding, just skinning around.
Just not enough snow , a bit too far south , and just not quite enough elevation I think
