Closed areas and closed for a reason. Very sad.
This was discussed in the Tahoe thread. Area was closed; they ducked a rope. Totally unprepared. Shame.
Wind loading, recent snow and rain, visible slide activity, known PWL, rapid temperature changes... 40+ degree slope. I think the odds of that chute sliding were probably higher than it not sliding.
Jack Pot in the foreground,
The entrance is about where you see looking through the empty chair.

Here is 10 year old pick at the top of Jack Pot chute. An avalanche would take you about 900 feet down into a choke where things flatten out a bit.

I read that 3 crews are in there today looking.
Washoe County Sherriff's
Report they found and recovered him shortly before 1 PM today.
RIP - Vibes to those he left behind, those who had to find and carry him off the mountain.
I heard the guy was from Bay Area, had a condo at Squaw and jumped over to Rose to get above the rain. My buddy who skied there yesterday said it was a boilerplate underbelly. Spot where dudes ducked rope gets the deepest windload in the chutes. I've gone out with patrol to blast the chutes and they fukking run when it goes, usually because of that wind load on a firm layer. I'd bet he was at least five feet deep. Prolly a Recco recovery.
There were way too many red flags to understand how these guys saw any green lights. The mind can be our own worst enemy I guess.
Sunday morning, I saw patrol and SAR searching the area in the Chutes with dogs. I didn't stay too long -- left around 11 AM -- but heard that they did a probe line search later in the day. I don't know how the body was eventually discovered.
