Heard this am 2 60+ yr old gentleman went out Mt Rose for some BC skiing caught in avie one escaped one buried. Search called off right now due to bad conditions. Body search at this point. Buried Skier no beacon. Wow.

Closed areas and closed for a reason. Very sad.
This was discussed in the Tahoe thread. Area was closed; they ducked a rope. Totally unprepared. Shame.

Here is 10 year old pick at the top of Jack Pot chute. An avalanche would take you about 900 feet down into a choke where things flatten out a bit.

Report they found and recovered him shortly before 1 PM today.

I heard the guy was from Bay Area, had a condo at Squaw and jumped over to Rose to get above the rain. My buddy who skied there yesterday said it was a boilerplate underbelly. Spot where dudes ducked rope gets the deepest windload in the chutes. I've gone out with patrol to blast the chutes and they fukking run when it goes, usually because of that wind load on a firm layer. I'd bet he was at least five feet deep. Prolly a Recco recovery.

Sunday morning, I saw patrol and SAR searching the area in the Chutes with dogs. I didn't stay too long -- left around 11 AM -- but heard that they did a probe line search later in the day. I don't know how the body was eventually discovered.
I'm guessing they had no idea what a red flag even is in terms of avalanche hazzard... at least I certainly hope that was the case.Quote:
