DIY Clamp for bike stand?

I've got a bench mounted stand I made from galvanized pipe following basically these instructions..

I still use the pvc clamp they describe, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm getting ready to build a floor stand with pipe (cheaper than buying one.. ) but want to figure out a better clamp. If it's easy and works I'll swap it out for my bench stand too..


So, any ideas? Anyone built their own stand and loving the clamp / bike attachment?

But I want something better!!

Not a floor stand, but I just use a couple loops of webbing hung from the ceiling. Cheaper and easier than a stand, and offers 360 degree access around the bike.

^^ But offers no stability when wrenching? I want something that can hold a bike solidly in place, preferably in a variety of angles / degrees

Any reason you don't want to just buy a clamp?

I thought about building my own but ended up just buying a used Park Tool floor stand for $60. Worth every penny.

The webbing is screwed solidly into some joists, so it can take a lot of downward force, and the webbing isn't flexy at all. I put some buckles on the loops, which makes it easy to attach to the bike, and also easy to adjust the angle of everything.

It's obviously not stable side to side, but that isn't a factor too often. Extracting press fit BB bearings is one of the few times that the side to side instability is kinda annoying.

It's certainly not as good as a real, heavy shop stand, but I have a consumer grade stand and I like the straps better.

If you are going to go to the effort of building something then copy the EVT right arm clamp.

Search around a few guys have made copies.

I did the wood block clamp. It works ok and is a good option on the cheap. Is a little tricky at first to clamp down but once you get the technique down it is pretty easy to do. The pipe clamp slides pretty quickly to stabilize the bike then a turn of the handle to finish tightening it down. I have been using mine for about 4 years now. I have built a half dozen or so bikes on it plus numerous fork rebuilds and weekly bike work.

I had free access to black pipe so my entire stand is made of black pipe with a 2x2 wood base. I might have to look into a speaker stand though.
