Well, I pulled the trigger on my first road bike...

After seeing my wife's new road bike arrive, I just had to start looking for my first road bike. I said to myself that I'd only pull the trigger if I found something that fit my budget ($300-400), and my size (54 cm). Highly unlikely, but sure enough, I did...and on ebay even :fmicon:

I spent $305 for it - a 2003 Fuji Newest, in new condition with less than 100 miles on it. Anyone ride a Fuji or even the Newest? Did I get hosed?! This being my first road bike ever, and having read some good reviews about this bike, and seeing it as basically new, figured it a good price.

I've GOT to stop buying new gear!!!!! :tongue:

Sounds like a solid steed that will serve you well. It just depends what you are planning on doing with it and what you expect it to be able to do well.

It's got a solid shimano groupo that should prove very reliable and durable. You'll prolly want to get into some clipless pedals if it's not so equipped as they are really a requirement for any semi-serious rider. If you want a bike that will allow for comfy touring and general fitness riding, it'll be perfect. If you get bit by the road bug and start to really log some miles it'll prove to be a bit slow and heavy to keep pace with a group of cat riders. In skiing there are casual rec skiers that can go out 5 times a year and take some runs, and there are those that frequent this forum and have an illness. Same holds true for cycling. The addiction and gear fetish can be quite severe.

You folks give BAD advice!!! :D (but I know I can always come to TGR to help me substantiate gear purchases!)

bike will be here the 18th...stoked to get out on the road for the 1st time.

I think you've made a smoov move whether or not you end up road riding a lot. If you don't, you haven't lost much money when the bike sits around. If you do, the bike won't keep you content for long, but you've gotten it cheaply enough either to turn it into a rain bike (the roadie equivalent of "rock skis") or to sell it for the same amount you paid. Buy some decent shoes and pedals and you can keep them when you upgrade the bike.

If you do any XC riding don't tell your friends you bought a road bike yet...just quietly let 'em eat your dirt when your roadie pedal stroke starts to show up on long and technical climbs. Have fun!

Yeah, i've got Time Atacs on my XC/freeride bike, so I'll probably just pick up another pair for the Fuji so I don't need different shoes.
