Join the AS-X bandwagon?

Kinda funny how a piece of gear around here gets a life of its own and becomes THE thing to have :) Back in the day it was Iggies, then Pocket Rockets, then Spatulas (I may have missed a couple along the way in there), etc...and in Sprocket Rockets we have the ALMIGHTY Yeti AS-X :D

Anyways on to the point! I just found out my hook on Yeti is a go. Altho no hook on the new 303 DH frame...heh. As if I could afford pro deal on that anyway. But I can get a schweet deal on an AS-X frame! Anyway, this would be to replace my '02 Spec. Big Hit frame which I've only ridden maybe 10 times but was ridden pretty hard by the guy I bought it from.

Reasons to swap out for the Yeti:
-Big Hit is a large, which I can ride, but I'm a bit more comfy on a medium so hopefully it'd fit me a bit better.
-A bit more pedal-friendly with the DHX and single pivot design. The Big Hit is awesome but almost too cush...climbing over a 100-yard slight rise on a road can burn my thighs worse than a 1 hour grunt on my trail bike.
-Yeti's are freakin cool...and the company is from CO which rules.
-I have the OK from the wife :D

Reasons to not do it:
-Big Hit is more of a true DH setup
-I'd be swapping all my parts onto the Yeti, including my Shiver...which could be a VERY big fork on that little 7" travel AS-X.
-I'd have to buy a couple new things like a reducer headset, maybe a BB/cranks...

So what yall think? Should I do it?

If it's your only Utah bike, do it. Though maybe I'd be able to keep up with you on climbs if you kept your Big Hit.

Could you sell the Shiver for enough to prodeal a smaller fork?

I think you should do it. At the very least I'll be able to swap my 5th Element for your DHX when you're out of town.

edit: and I found out you have to buy a 150mm hub (about $200) PLUS if you want a chainguide it has to be Foes' proprietary chainguide which is another $200-ish. So that pretty much knocks that thing out of reach. Ugh.

Frizzle--yeah it'll be my only UT bike. Which completely eliminates any climbing if I keep the BH (except for that ride up to the med school when we went urbaning...heh).

There is no question. I just put a DHX on my AS-X and love it (a bit more harsh right now but I've still got to dial it in). Climbs like a jeep and rocks like a bobsled. Get a Medium if you can (that's what I have and I'm 6'). The Shiver DC would be a bit much but would work for a time (Krispy runs an 888 on his but he is an animal). I really want a Fox36, maybe we could work out something for my Sherman....

I just did Amasa Back on Tuesday night on the AS-X; FKNA! It climbs better than any bike I have ever had and coming down is pure DH (drop the seat the whole way, put on pads, ROCK).

Lastly, ALL you guys have to get out of I-Street and come ride some actual trails with real speed and drops. Saying that, we'll see you this weekend up there. :biggrin:

Did that change? I only ask as my companies Denver office is right across the street from Yeti and I've been in there a few times. They showed me the plant and even where they were welding up the AS-X (they had stacks of them a few years ago, talk about a drool-fest). Really cool bunch of folks and the shop is FULL of the coolest stuff on earth.

Yeti Frames
Where are Yeti frames made. The short answer is that we manufacture in two facilities - our Colorado facility and at a custom builder in Taiwan. But that's not the whole story…

We are very committed to domestic manufacturing and have invested heavily over the years to equip our factory to produce the finest bicycles in the world. Our production method in our Colorado facility is intentionally slow and precise. As such, we can only produce a limited number of frames in our facility - about 3,000 frames per year.

As our products have continued to gain popularity, we have moved some production to other manufacturers. Our quality standards are pretty rigid, so finding a qualified manufacturing facility in the USA was difficult. After trying to work domestically, we turned to a small custom frame builder in Taiwan. We have known the owner for ten years and he has been very amenable to adopt similar techniques used in our Colorado factory. Our engineers regularly visit the factory to ensure the frames are the highest quality possible.

These frames are then sent to us in Colorado where they go through a rigid quality control process. Once they pass inspection, we do all the final assembly - press in the bearings, install the hardware, machined parts, and install the rear shock.

Making frames this way takes more time, but we feel it ensures that all Yeti frames are the highest quality available.

Frames made in Colorado: 303 DH, AS-Rsl, ARC, Special Projects, and all race bikes and prototypes.

Frames made in Taiwan: AS-X, DJ, 575

Actually I can get a Slider Plus doublecrown fork for the Yeti and just sell the Shiver...any opinions on those? I've never really ridden Manitou--pretty much just been a 'zoke rider...

got a bike coming my way (should be anyway) thats got a slider plus dc on it. ill ride it around the block and let you know how well it handles curb hucks (to flat of course). if only the brown truck would hurry and get the F over here! DAMN YOU UPS

Thanks Truth, that was cool reading. I really liked the guys over there, very friendly bunch who are totally into bikes.

Particle, Rotney has the Slider DC on his AC1, seems to like it a lot. I want to get rid of my Manitou but truthfully, there is nothing wrong with it. A DH40 is what you really want (plus you should get one for your buddy giving you internet advice). :biggrin:

REI has a medium AS-X $2199.93 - I'm confident I could get another 10% knocked off because it's not an '05. $1980, if anyone is interested.
