Standing still on the fucking escalator blocking the 'left lane' for non-fat fucks who understand that simply because the stairs are moving doesn't mean you can't move. Go back to fucking Kansas or the west coast or wherever that's acceptable. Premium gas in a modern car. Unless you need complete performance for some reason you're just donating money to Exxon or whoever. Doing it wrong.

I could've put regular in the WRX and the computer would pull out timing and boost and it would run like shit, probably worse than a non-turbo. For $3 or $4 extra per fill up I'll take the performance the car was designed to have, thanks.

It was weird when I moved west and the lowest octane went from 87 to 85. I just couldn't do it for awhile

^ the increase in altitude results in lower atmospheric pressure, effectively lowering your engine's compression ratio, making higher octane fuel unnecessary.

I do like a nice Oregon Pinot with some fish preparations.

I also like a mineraly Vigonier with some meat dishes like a proper tartare

And I was under the impression that my BMW requires premium because of how the engine is tuned for compression.

Yeah, even with turbo these days premium is unnecessary unless you really need that extra .2 seconds going 0-60. Computer just adjust the compression so you don't get the knock that old cars used to get. I had a turbo car for about 10 years and wasted my money for the first 1 to 2 years, as the manufacturer suggested, putting in 91. Went to 87 for the rest of the time and never really noticed a difference. The Car Talk guys have something about this online somewhere, and I've read things from both gasoline techs (like Shell or somewhere) and high performance engine designers who admit that it's basically unnecessary these days to use premium. I would guess that over the life of your car it could easily amount to $1000 spent for very little difference.

But anyway...back to the morons blocking the gondy who twodogs is such a fan of. Or someone else doing it wrong.

Yeah, I'd love to hear how a computer adjusts "the compression." If anything it's more important in new cars because running right on the edge of knock is more efficient and makes more power. And most cars that require 91 are nicer and make more power, so if you're bitching about a few bucks every fill up get an old civic. Or else this can happen: happens

Don't remember what car exactly but a newer 2.5 turbo subaru. Seemed like we were averaging at least one a week, mostly due to the available fuel and subaru's engine mapping.

Because that's what it does--it adjusts the timing on the spark so that the fuel doesn't ignite prematurely which is why you used to get 'knock' (and don't anymore). That's what it's designed to do, and it works.

From the Car Talk site listing myths about premium fuel:

Myth:
Using regular gas in a car designed for premium will definitely damage the engine.

We don't believe that any modern engine that claims to require premium will be damaged by using regular unleaded judiciously. Neither do any of the sources we've checked with - including the American Petroleum Institute, the American Engine Rebuilders Association - even a chemist (who would rather go unnamed) at a major gasoline company.

The octane of the fuel you need to run is determined by the compression of the engine. Higher compression engines have a better chance of pre ignition(knocking), The octane is the measure of how much compression the fuel can withstand before detonating on its own(there is no extra power). Newer cars sense engine knock and will adjust the timing to attempt to stop the knocking with lower octane fuels. Older cars did not do this so you needed to run higher octane fuel if you experienced knocking. Higher elevations engine compression is lower so lower octane fuel is needed, ever notice Colorados premium fuel is 91, go to a sea level state and premium is 93. Running a higher octane will not give an engine on its own more performance. This is 100% a myth. There are two ways you see better performance from running higher octane fuel, your engine has a high compression and you should have always been running that fuel(ie manufacture recommended fuel in the manual), or your cars computer monitors engine knocking and can adjust the timing to make use of the higher octane fuel, provided your car can physically compress the fuel enough to need the different timing. This is why running higher octane fuel then what the manufacture recommends is a waste of money.

Now is when people and their highly calibrated butt dynos will say they noticed all kinds of extra power when they switch from 85/87 octane to 91/93 in their car.

But what do I do to scorn people filling their 8th-hand German imports with E-83 at the pump? Verbally insult them?
