Tuckerman Ravine 5/6/05

This was my 2nd trip up Tux so far this year. One run down Left Gully then hiked from Left Gully to Hillmans Highway. Nice corn warm temps sorta overcast on top and a ton of wind. Anyway here are the pics.

After lunch in the the snow was so good and I have never skied Hillmans Highway so I hiked over to Hiking to Hillmans Highway. This pic is looking back at the top of Left Gully half way to Hillmans.

I would have loved to have hit Dodge's Drop but I was solo so I did not do it but the tracks in it looked super good.

Oh and I hope this gets crossed posted on T4T because I for some reason have been unable to post there but I did have my radio on 9-14.

Still a couple weeks of skiing up there, eh?

I would say 4 weeks or more. As so as the Auto road opens The Great Gulf should be sweet I hear there is a ton of snow in the chutes.

Cool to see there's still some snow left on the trails at Wildcat too.

I'm hoping for a post-finals assault on tucks. If it works out it would be my first ever. Ultimately depends on whether I can drag my not-very hardcore friends (and myself) away from boozing and go for a real adventure during our last week in college. If I knew some other maggots would be up there in the coming week it would definitely provide incentive.

I was up there yesterday with Gincognito and another friend and it was the middle of fricken winter up there. We spent the day in the middle of a snowstorm with some really strong winds..especially on top of left gully. It was kinda hard to believe that it was like the middle of February at tucks, while back in Montreal it was getting up to 20 C on a bluebird day resulting in a fleshfest downtown. :(

We only did two runs the day because it was absolutly brutal snow conditions. It was ice on ice with a little more ice and frozen corn. The skiing was really rough. The top of left gully was pure survival turns until we got to choke. After that it was "O.K" and I could actually link a couple of turns without worring to much about loosing an edge. It was all worth it though cause a little lower down I got a couple of windloaded powder jump turns (thanks gin) near the bottom.

We spent quite a bit of time talking with the ranger and he said that we are 3-4 weeks behind last year. Hopefully I'll make it back there in a couple of weeks if the weather gets nice, but right now I'm off to a cafe to do some people watching.:biggrin:

Top of Left Gully was ske-tchy. Probably the most sketchy thing I've done on teles (I don't think I've ever dropped that much vertical without turning (or falling)). Just the sound of skis scraping and skittering over that "snow" was enough to ratchet the sphincter a few degrees tighter.

But, yeah, those turns at the bottom were sweet and the whole experience was definitely one for the books.
