Cat bites, bad?

OK, so our cat got spooked and bit me on Saturday afternoon. Right index finger, first knuckle, drew blood in two spots. Small wounds, and they closed fairly quickly. Wife had been bitten by another cat before, and the bite became swollen very quickly(within 12 hrs), and she had to go in and get antibiotics and a tetanus shot. We monitored the injury for the next day, and there was no swelling, so I didn't worry about it.

Yesterday, I noticed that my finger is starting to become inflamed and the movement of that joint is becoming limited. And my finger is getting sore.

I don't know when my last tetanus shot was. Time for me to go and get one?

Yeah, you might wanna go to a walk-in clinic or somewhere just to be on the safe side.
Remember, cats and dogs don't brush, floss, or use mouth wash. It's like a petri dish in there.
Was it fireworks, or do you just have one of those weird psycho cats?

I picked up a musical birthday card for a friend of ours, and it scared the shit out of Jben. He's super friendly, he just doesn't like singing hamburgers I guess.

I am sorry, but the hamburger-induced-panic-attack cat has me uncontrollably laughing.

In all honesty that card kinda freaked me out too; need to bite a finger.

My buddy got bit by his brothers cat. Ended up with a blood infection and was on IV antibiotics for 5 days. Only good cat is a flat cat.

At least it wasn't a Komodo dragon.

That card isn't very scary. Time for a new cat.

Yeah, after seeing that, I called my Doc, and I'm going in to see her tomorrow.

Cat bite and scratch gave me one of the worst infections that I ever had last fall. My hand blew up like a balloon, hurt like a bitch. Run, don't walk to the doc.

I believe in a one strike and you're out policy for biting animals. But yeah, get yourself to a doctor soon.

Only been bitten a couple of times, (not bad for nearly 30 years in the biz.) Some are no big deal, but others can get nasty quickly. If things are getting swollen and hot, time to get seen and on some antibiotics. Don't let them get carried away with treatment unless you are not responding to simple treat on something like augmentin. My wife nor I have ever been to an MD for a cat bite (she is a vet as well), but self treat as needed. Most arre no big deal and easy to treat, but they can go south in some circumstances and get real nasty.

We treat cat bites fairly frequently in the OR. My concern would be that it bit you on the knuckle, so it might have got into the joint. The puncture wounds close up and the infection can't drain. This can be very bad, you can develop osteomyelitis and get septic if it moves beyond the digit into the hand. One of the nurses I work with got bit by her cat on the knuckle and we had to open her joint to let it drain and she was treated for several day with IV antibiotic for the pasturela infection.

I was told by more than one doctor that dog bites are one of the least likely to be infected and human bites are one of the most likely to get infected.

If a person bites you hard enough to break skin, do you go the doctor before or after you dispose of the biters body?
