Infected cut (I think) swelling worse after starting antibiotics

So I noticed my finger slightly swollen and tender the other day. It didn't fee broken (have lots of experience there) so I thought that maybe it was a cut that had got infected. Waited 2 days and it got slightly worse. Went to the doc and got an script for 1g cephalexin every 8 hours. I've been doing that for three days now and the finger is a lot worse looking. It's no longer tender on the underside as it was before but it's swollen as hell near the nail. Is this normal? Should I go back to the doc?

Thanks that seems like what going on. Should I be worried that it's not getting better after 3 days of antibiotics?

So went to the doctor for a "I totally could have done this at home" poke with a needle and bandaid. Oh well that's why they get paid the big bucks

Nope--paronychia. ian and jon had it right. And FWIW Chugached had a felon, much more serious.
If the doc that drained the paronychia was a GP/family doc I'm impressed. If he/she was an internist and didn't faint at the sight of blood I'm really impressed. If he was a pediatrician isn't it time you started seeing an adult doc?

I had a felon for sure. Through the dermis and everything. That hole was almost to bone. Finger infections scare the crap out of me now.
